opinions?
« on: March 16, 2004, 01:01:59 AM »
ive got two options next yr and i'm not sure which to take

bowling in our premier league in the area i have two possible teams to bowl on.

Team one-
this is the team i bowled on this season, we finished bottom 5 every quarter, i grew up in juniors bowling with or against alot of these bowlers, and their all pretty good friends of mine, but they just aren't seasoned bowlers except for one. They dont know how to move, adjust, or make spares consistantly. I enjoy bowling with them but in a league of this caliber i'd be in the bottom rung mostl ikely.

Team Two-
made up of some of the premier young bowlers in the area. This team would average clsoe to 1120 scratch. I am friends with them, but they aren't as fun to bowl with if they bowl bad. But all of them are top flight caliber bowlers and look to be a dominant force in any league they bowl in.

It looks to be a choice between having fun and being competitive, and i jsut don't know whati  want to do. i mean my friends will be in the league so i can see em, andi  want to win, but i also want to bowl wit hmy friends

what would you do in my spot? i can make a ton morem oney bowling for team 2 in all likelyhood, i am just at a loss.

if you were bowling on a casual league where it was more for fun and individual average rather than team success, then bowling with your friends would be the best choice.  but i think u answered your own question when u said they arent "seasoned" bowlers, because u really need a balanced, consistent team in order to do well in a top notch league.  if youre interested in recognition and earnings, bowl with the second group...or else get your friends to bowl in a less comopetitive, more casual style league with u.  i know its a tough decision, but i think thats the best choice.

I would choose the latter and bowl with the better team. Team Socring records are fun to try for. Competition only makes bowlers better. Nothing wrong taking the game very serious every week for one night.

The first team.  I bowl only with friends.  Have won two leagues with teams that were supposedly "weak" and have made the rolloff in almost every other league.  I've won city and regional tournaments bowling only with people I really like who support each other and work to get better.  And guess what: I have fun.

Tournaments are about money and position.  Leagues are competition, but when it overwhelms the fun, you have lost the real spirit of bowling every week with your group.

Talk your team mates from team 1 into taking lessons, you live in Akron for god's sake, home of Fred Freaking Bordon, if he can't help them then bowl with team 2 with no regrets.

Is there the possibility of bowling with the 2nd team in the premier league and moving your 1st team to a different league/night?  You could even possibly find a league for the first team with a smaller prize fund.  That way neither you nor your friends will be losing as much money and you can still bowl for fun.  Look at it as you doing your friends a favor.  Then you can do yourself the favor of bowling the money league with the second team and have a better chance at winning some cash.
