Eye Dominance
« on: January 01, 2006, 01:10:11 PM »
Ive heard that eye dominance can play a roll in bowling.
How true is this? I know it does in shooting guns but
how can it apply to bowling when you keep both eyes open?

Even with both eyes open, your brain still processes what your dominant eye sees as primary and matches the other eye to it. Having an opposite dominant eye can move your actual target up to 2 boards to the outside of what you're aiming point at the arrows, i.e. you swear you're splitting the 10 board but you're actually hitting the 8.

Eye dominance isn't a big deal if YOU are the only one concerned with targeting, and the only one watching where you're hitting.

Recently I was trying to line someone up. I said hit 10. They hit 12. I said hit 10. They said "I did". We went back and forth several times - she was hitting EXACTLY the same spot every time - just not what I told her to hit. I then asked her if she was left eye dominant - she was. At that point, it was easy to figure out what to tell her...

I am a left eyed dominant right handed bowler and in my case the difference is more like 3 boards. It was only a few years ago after reading a magazine article that this came to light. I also was able to cover this further while working with Susie Minshew at one point. It does make a big difference when you have to look at 7 or 8 to hit 10. I have ofter wondered if I could bowl with one eye closed to try to overcome this difference. Probably not, but might be interesting. When I use target lines and break points it does not seem to have as big an impact as trying to split boards. The main thing is to know your eye dominance and then know if trying to line up off someone else, know what adjustments to make.

Sorry about getting it backwards. I was up too long at the time.

If you wear glasses, you can use a pair of grey flip up sunglasses with the lens removed from your non-dominant eye.  This dims the view from your dominant eye and lets your non-dominant eye take over targeting duties.
If you're right-handed, remove the right lens, opposite for leftys.

If you don't wear glasses, get some cheap sunglasses and pop one lens out of those.

Make sure the lenses are grey, not green or brown.  You want to dim the light, not change the colors of things.
