why did I ever use inserts
« on: May 15, 2003, 02:13:00 AM »
I just redrilled two balls to use without inserts for the first time. WOW, so far after 20+ games I love it. Dont know why I didnt try this sooner.

I have a lot of "natural lift" ,as quoted by a couple of coaches, and when I needed to crank it up a bit more the fingers would swell a little. I would sometimes even get a split on the inside edge just below the first joint. No matter what ball I used or who drilled it. Pitches were confirmed by two different drillers to be correct. I burn  through inserts so quickly, not even the ones with pitches just ovals, that I finally decided to give it a try.

So far no noticeable stress on the fingers whatsoever. Even if I push the rev's past 400. The feeling is good every time and I dont seem to have to fuss with my fingers as they go into the ball.

Maybe not for everyone, expecially the rev challenged like my wife, but I like it a lot and look forward to the savings on inserts and new skin. Only problem now is that I hang up in the ones with inserts. Guess summer is the best time for the change as I wont be needing all of them right away

I'd love to go back to the ball's surface and not use the inserts, with one exception: they enable me to adjust the size incredibly easily, by inserting shims, in the form of small piece of carboard/business cards. When I had the plain drilled hole, I was forever cutting little slivers of tape to line the back of the hole. It was very messy.

To cut down on revs you can have the holes drilled with some backpitch.

The inserts are incredibly comfortable and they reduce wear and tear and callouses on your fingers.

FYI despite whatever revs you may have, you can learn not to rev the ball so much, just because you can. It's hard, but one can learn to do that.

hey rocnbowl, i revently had a ball given to me without inserts. I too am loving the difference and i feel that i can vary my release a bit more. Also i have noticed that over a few weeks i can now go seemlessly from no inserts to inserts without the hangup i experienced in the beginning. Good luck with it Mike
