Fairbanks, Alaska - Info requested

Looks like the fam and I are moving to Fairbanks, AK.  I see there is a center in Fairbanks, can someone provide info on proshops, tournaments, leagues, overall health of youth leagues, etc.

Best options will probably be the bowling center activities on the 2 nearby military bases, Ft. Wainwright and Eielson AFB.  Ft. Wainwright borders Fairbanks and Eielson AFB is about a 30 min drive (particularly fun at -30 degrees with no real "highway" lighting).

That's one thing I've really liked about USAF; they are really bowler friendly, in the fact that out of the 10 AFBs I've been on (I worked DoD), only 2 didn't have a bowling alley at the commissary: Los Angeles AFB (it's just a building south of LAX), and Nellis. All the others (Offutt, Vance, Tinker, McConnell, Randolph, Travis, Beale, and Wright-Patterson) all had bowling alleys. Good chance that Eielson and Elmendorf would, though Elmendorf will be a long drive back down to Anchorage.

But definitely look into the AFBs. they should have something.

There's a guy, who posts on here sometime that bowls out of Alaska that is usually top 100 is the open championships.  Can't recall the name and I couldn't find him in a quick search.  Not sure which city he bowls out of but he might be a good source of info for you and hopefully he'll see your post.

I know several bowlers but they are located in southern Alaska down by Anchorage (weather is quite a bit peachier)

I'll be stationed at Eielson, don't intend to live on base but near it.  I hear they might be building a new center on base.

Arctic Bowl is the center in Fairbanks. Both military bases do have centers as well but havent been to either in years. Most tourneys and decent leagues seem to be at arctic bowl. There's some decent bowlers there. Kerry Painter out of the senior tour lives/bowls up there now. A couple decent tournaments a year. Most fbks guys travel to Anchorage for some other tournaments as well. The biggest tourney of the year is in anchorage, the 700 club, $4000 for first guaranteed regardless of entries. Usually gets around 90-100 guys, top 64 cash, two game total pins bracket matchplay, double elimination. That's in February. I'm sure we will see u around at some point. Good luck with the move!

Thanks for the info. 

Assuming we get the assignment, we won't be arriving until August.
