Favorite Layout
« on: April 29, 2009, 08:31:53 PM »
I was wondering if any of you fellow BR'ers have any favorite layouts that you put on a your equipment.  If so, what are they?  Discuss why you use said layouts.

I've personally never had two balls laid out the same, wish I could find a couple layouts I can stick with.

I've got a bit of variety in layouts, but I've got two balls with 5.5" pin-PAP with about the same amount of mass bias/pin angle.

I generally am a little rev dominant, so these layouts help me get the ball down the lane a little further.

If I have no clue or specific plan with a ball, and if it has a 3-4" pin, a stacked layout with the pin at 4.5" from PAP above the fingers (for me, right above the ring finger) has been a very good choice, and I have used it on light oil pieces (Sahara) to heavy oilers (Sanded XXcel). With my lower speed, it delays the breakpoint and back end reaction well - neither too strong, nor too weak, and with sufficient recovery. Surface tuning does the rest.

anything to delay hook so pin over fingers or over the label to smooth out break point.

I say I'm a little rev dominant but with not a lot of revs, but maybe I'm matched up pretty well.  I think I have a general idea of what to try.

steve, what is your speed and rev rate, and how do you roll the ball?  I imagine you have plenty of hand if you benefit from such a layout.

Anyone else?

I tend to like 5.5 pin - pap, above and below the ring, with the MB between 45 and 60*.  This gives me decent length with a strong but controlled move off the break.

I'm a big pin below the bridge guy and kick the CG out depending on the core strength, weaker core kick it way out and use a big weight hole, strong core small or no weight hole if possible. This comes out to roughly 5-3/8" from my axis right now, though my track has been slowly rising.

i like stacked leverage layouts myself, but i am becoming a huge fan of the double thumb

i also like to delay the hook as well
so typically i lay it out w/ the pin above and right of the bridge

also like the modified rico layout on super strong balls

the vast majority of my equipment has the pin butted right up against the ring finger, the cg is straight down from the pin, and if there is a mass bias indicator it is straight down from the cg. there is usually a big hole down in the lower right thumb quadrant. this type of layout gives me a medium amount of track flare and good backend reaction. most of my emphasis is placed on the surface preparation of the coverstock.

Do you mean the cg or the pin?  Sometimes the pin, cg, at MB aren't all in line.

Is that total track flare or distance between the individual oil rings?

Do you know what the layout is relative to your PAP(i.e 4x4)?

Usually my favorite layouts are in Playboy where I read the articles. Or hustler when I am facinated by the outstanding photography.

In third place, 5.5 x 5.5 pin above (rev rate dominate) and RICO's.

strike domination, i only select balls that have the pin, cg, and mass bias indicator in a straight line. secondly, i'm more of an old school type player. i don't live in the pro shop or excessively fiddle around with exotic layouts. my pro shop man simply drills the equipment the way i ask and i go try it out. i probably make a change or two in the surface of the ball and go. i don't change balls as often as i change my angle of attack, ball speed, axis of rotation, etc.
