Favorite position on your team?
« on: November 27, 2016, 01:23:01 PM »
Which position do you prefer to bowl in, and why? My favorite position is lead off because I like to feel like I am (pardon the pun) getting the ball rolling in a close game. Build the team's momentum to clench the win.

Handicap league - lead off guy, keep the pace moving and shoe off quickly to bolt out the door.

Scratch league - anchor.

Based on Average.  Anchor - High avg.  1st - 2nd high avg.  2nd - weakest bowler. 3rd or 4th, best spare shooter.  Where I bowl depends on who I am bowling with.

I've always liked bowling leadoff. I like going first and setting the tone. This year I'm actually bowling anchor in both leagues im in

2nd or 4th. Only want anchor if I honestly feel like I'm the best on the team. Not a fan of lead off as I like a short break between practice ending. 3rd just seems weird but I would be ok with it if 2nd and 4th are taken.

on 3 and 4 man teams I don't care where I throw.  on 5 man teams I just don't want to be 3rd.  3rd always feels weird to me.

For the majority of years I've been bowling, I've been team captain.

So I would usually ask what position the others wanted and invariably I wound up being anchor because no one else wanted it.

Which was okay by me.

If I'm in a singles tournament with several on a pair of lanes, I like being first especially if your having to move lanes.

I hate being last on the lane for singles moving pairs because I feel rushed to get done and move.

I like being last so I can get a read of the pair watching the other bowlers.

I have been anchor on most teams I have bowled on except my scratch team where I lead off. We have 4 guys who could anchor so it is not a big deal.

I have always been a lead off or number 3 bowler. I have always been one of the high average guys on any team I bowl. I prefer lead off but on my current team the lowest average guy is the captain and he likes lead off, so I'm bowling second. We have a 35 point system and there are 5 individual points. I have had one of the best winning percentages over the last few years, because as another bowler stated, many team put their worst bowler in the 2nd position.

I don't like the whole fixed order based off of average concept. In theory, you can have a high average bowler who, for whatever reason, almost never pulls through in a clutch game, but have a lower. average bowler who will put the ball in the pocket every time in a clutch game. On both my leagues, I am the highest average on my team. I anchor one league instead of lead off because the other team mate I trust as anchor would rather not be anchor. On the other league, another teammate is anchor because, although I am the higher average, I feel he is the better bowler in any other house and is a solid performer in the 10th frame.

I'm most comfortable bowling leadoff, or bowling setup to the anchor (3rd of 4th)

This, I'm out the door before the ink is dry on the recap sheet.

As long as I'm in the lineup, I'm ok. I've bowled all the spots on a 5 man team, usually 3rd on a 4 man team.

The anchor bowler is an interesting position to me. You need a guy with  turkey-striking potential, but also a guy who won't whiff a corner pin in the 10th. I've always said the guys in front of the anchor need to come up big in the end, take the heat off of him.

On my 4 man scratch league my 215 average puts me 3rd best on the team and leaves me in the number 2 spot. But on my handicap league I've been anchor for several years and I don't much care for it. I have a couple of reasons why I feel anchor is the worst position on my particular team. Usually the game has already been determined if we won or lost by the time my 10th frame comes around and the other bowlers are grabbing their equipment off the ball return as I'm trying to finish which is annoying. Second, the bowler in front of me is a social butterfly and is never around when it's his turn to bowl which frustrates the heck out of me.
