Title: Fear and respect
Post by: jac on April 01, 2004, 10:20:12 PM
what ever happened to the days when the best bowlers
were feared and respected??

I bowled in a tournament this past weekend with several
very talented bowlers.  I have bowled against these
guys for years and only through hard work and dedication
have I become good enough to compete with these guys at
there level........Scratch.  These are the guys that when
they walked into a tournament you groaned because deep down
you knew that when the dust finally settled they would be around
the top of the leader board.  Maybe not on top but definately in
the top 10.  These were the guys I immulated, feared and respected.

Like I said I bowled in a tournament this past weekend and when
a couple of bowlers of this calibur walked by the pair of lanes
next to me a young man on that pair asked me who the guy was.
When I told him who he was he said " I hear he is a very good
bowler" before I could acknowledge that Yes he is.  This guys buddy
said "Don't worry about him, he is Scratch and with our handicap
we will kick his butt.

That is when I realized that as a scratch bowler in a handicap world
the best are no longer feared by anyone that gets free pins.

Has anyone else expierienced this??

How do you expect to win if you "Fear" the good bowlers.  Fear no one and you will be a much better bowler.  If you think someone is better than you then in your mind they've already beaten you.

After you get to a certain level the fear goes away but the respect for those that deserve it still remains.  When I averaged about 170 years ago there was some nerves but as I got better and started winning the nerves were gone.  When the game is serious you bring all you have and that is all you can do.

I can understand respecting certain bowlers but fearing a bowler?? Not a chance!! The way I look at it is on any given night he/she could have a bad night and you could beat them!!
