Down and In..ball choice?
« on: January 04, 2010, 08:17:31 AM »
Hey everyone, I've recently started bowling again after about an 8 month period of no bowling at all and I would like to purchase a new ball. My signature shows what I currently have (a whole 2 balls). I'm looking for something that would take well to playing down and in on your THS which is usually on the medium side in my area. My ball speed is around 16 mph and my revs I would have to guess on but would put around 275ish. After looking around on online, reading reviews, and watching videos; I think I may have it narrowed down. At the moment I'm thinking either the Roto-Grip Nomad or the Storm Furious. I'd prefer to go with a Storm or Roto-Grip but always open to suggestions for other companies as long as it's not an Ebonite cause I just don't pair well with their balls. Mostly what I'm looking for from you guys is your opinion on ball choice and drilling choice(5x3 maybe?)for that ball that would best fit playing down and in for my style. Please feel free to ask me any variables that would help with your opinion and I'll do the best I can to answer for you. Thank you

while others may disagree i don't buy particular balls to play a certain shot or a particular part of the lane. i have an arsenal and i let the lanes dictate what i need to do. it could be any of these variables: ball speed, angle of attack, axis rotation, loft, or the piece of equipment.

I disagree. I had a THS briefly when it was first released, mainly because it was marketed as being a remake of the original Teal Buzzsaw. IMO the backend was stronger than advertised, and I sold it shortly after drilling. It's not necessarily that it was a BAD ball, just not what I was looking for at the time. I don't know that I would suggest it for a down and in stroker, since it made a pretty defined move for me. More angular than I expected.

I would still recommend the Nomad Solid. I've seen some very low rev bowlers (women) have success with the Hy-Road playing down and in, so it may be something to look into.

As a down-and-in stroker, my experience with a label-drilled THS has been different.  Not angular at all, but very rolly with a smooth arc to the pocket.  It's funny how some balls work for some but not for others.  I can't speak to the Nomad Solid... I wish I had one to compare it with the others talked about here!

My THS is stronger than the HyRoad and can handle medium to medium heavy oil.  I can play it down & in using an end-over-end release, but with my bread & butter release, it is definitely more of a strong arcing ball.  I have it drilled with a leverage stacked layout.  My HyRoad is definitely a better option for me if I play the twig shot down & in.
