Well I think we should cut out the fat, get rid of everyone but; Columbia, Ebonite, Brunswick, Storm, Track, Roto-Grip, Dyno-Thane, Hammer.

Companies like; Lane #1, LaneMasters, Visionary, Circle Athletics, Insight, etc just seem to... "Cheap" and I wouldn't ever go near there stuff, I have however considered trying Lane #1 and Visionary...

Coming from a consumer perspective, it's hard to see the smaller companies unless you know a pro shop guy who uses that equipment or have a friend who throws that brand. Most of the people I know stick to AMF, Brunswick, Columbia, Ebonite, Hammer, Storm, Track and I have had the chance also to see some Dynothane, Lane 1 and Visionary balls. I've yet to see a Circle Athletics ball from anyone, same with Insight and no one around here throws Legends either.

I'm all for competition, but how often have you seen a small ball manufacturer last more than 5 or 6 years before they fade away?

Choice is wonderfull. I would hate to see the bowling industry be like the computer and software industry, Intel, IBM and Microsoft dividing up the industry and dominating.

However, understanding technology is very difficult today. Without actually drilling one and throwing one, there is no valid consistant way to predetermine how a ball might react based on the spec's for a specific bowler. Layout become a guess.

As well, more manufactures and more balls bring competition with lowers the price for everyone.

Choices are great!  I remember a time when it was almost just Brunswick or AMF.  Columbia was not that big back then.  Lots of opportunities in the industry.  Many of the best things started on kitchen tables or in garages.  The Asians are becoming aggressive with shoes and equipment.  It might be good by increasing technology and lowering cost at the same time.

I don't feel there are too many manufacturers... However, some of the big names need to lay off how many balls they offer / and how often they release new stuff.  I seriously question the quality of most of the big namers because they are using the "shotgun" approach to sales.  Just blast a bunch of stuff out and hope something sticks.  The small guys have to make thiers better the first time and make sure it sticks if they want to survive.

I think that there are a lot of people out there with new and innovative ideas....seems like the industry shifts every 10-15 years...70's plastic...80 urethane...90s reactive...time for some new ideas...
