Medium oil Benchmark
« on: April 18, 2009, 01:01:49 AM »
Hello all.  I'd like to pick up a nice medium oil control ball with PBA patterns in mind.  I have light oil (Visionary B/G Centaur) and med/heavy (Storm Tour Power) covered, but don't really have anything for true mediums.  I'd prefer something with lower RG, but still pretty clean through the heads.  With my rev rate, balls that lope a lot don't seem to read PBA patterns well for me.  I'm open to most manufacturers, but would prefer something without a labor intensive cover (Ebonite, Hammer, Columbia, Track).  I always like trying different companies - I don't own any AZO, Lanemasters, or 900 Global.

The Break or Cell sound like what I want, but probably more ball than I want.  I probably won't want polish on a PBA league and don't want to drill the guts out them either.

Other ideas?
Brunswick - Copperhead, Sidewinder (still available?)
Lanemasters? Don't really know anything about their line, but would like to try
Visionary - Gladiator Solid

Edit - I'll most likely buy this through my pro shop, so I'd prefer to stay with current releases that he would either have in stock or easily order.

The Creature solid and Maniac from 900G are good choices, I think. Maybe take the polish off of the Creature and put some on the Maniac, or take the Maniac up to 2000.

Maybe a Terminator Rebellion if you're looking into Lane Masters.

Geoff,

The Creature solid uses the same coverstock and color as the old Columbia Power Surge. It's purple SuperFlex solid with an appearance additive that makes it look like a pearlization but it is not. I had a Creature (drilled it wrong, sold it) and have the Power Surge.

There is a Creature Pearl. I am suggesting the Creature Solid.

The Street Rod Solid or Avalanche Solid with the shine knocked off would be my choice for what you're looking for.  I also like the Sure Fire and Creature Solid suggestions.

Since everyone has all the usual suspects covered I'll throw in AMF's The Heist as a suggestion. Your pro shop could still find one, I'm sure.

Does your Tsunami H20 not work for this? Or do you still have it?

I just picked up Brunswick's Swarm and Wild Ride.  If you're thinking PK18, I'd go with the Wild Ride.  Revs up quickly, sails through the heads and makes a strong yet controllable move to the pocket.  The Swarm was pretty skid flippy for me, but might stabilize if you knocked off the shine with a 4000 abralon pad.

Lane Masters balls are extremely reliable, durable, and very controlled with their symmetrical cores.  Previous suggestions for the XS Power and the Terminator Rebellion for a benchmark ball are spot on, but you should know that the TR is pretty rolly.  You may also want to consider the Sure Strike if you're thinking pearl.

I still have the Tsunami.  I don't know if it is the ball's nature, or how weak I drilled it, but it doesn't roll well on flat patterns.  It acts allergic to oil.  Too much head oil and it skates too long to read the pattern well, and if it ever hits carry down, it's worthless.  Even on a THS I have a love/hate relationship with it.  I see many others that really like theirs for everything.  Come to think of it, I do have a spare one NIB.  I could drill that one up with a more standard drill pattern.  Sure would beat it sitting around collecting dust.

The problem with these balls for Strider, in my opinion, is that he uses the Tour Power for his medium-heavy oil ball and wants/needs a weaker ball for medium oil. Both these balls, a great as they are, are significantly stronger than a Tour Power, in regards to both cover and core. He'd use them for heavy oil, not medium.

Yep!  charlest's suggestions of Creature and Ogre Pearl are good ones in that (Strider the other Geoff) bowling technique are better known to longtime members of BR.com.

I'll add Gladiator Solid and Hei$t (I have both) are a bit more than than Ogre Pearl and Creature but still smooth balls....way less ball than a ball like a Playmaker or Gamebreaker.

Issue to remember here is what Strider is using for heavy Tour Power and light G/B Centaur.  Not what you think is medium but what Strider thinks.

How about The Code or Nkryption Code from AMF?

Brunswick PK18 has always been good to me, but I haven't thrown anything new from them.

Finally got a chance to talk to my driller.  Turns out he's now a manager at a different house as well, so his time is hard to come by.  He thought the Creature was a great choice as well.  None in stock, but one will be ordered Monday at the latest.  With any luck, I can have it drilled up before next weekend.
