best ball for a pin axis drilling
« on: December 02, 2008, 05:49:38 AM »
I am wondering what ball you would recommend for a pin on the axis drilling.  As I understand it this will basically make the balls response only a factor of cover, speed and revolutions.. It will take the core out of it.
Also, would a symetrical ball be better than an assymetrical..
just off the top of my head I am thinking Hammer Anger...strong cover.. can change the cover pretty easily.
Or maybe a urethane.?  not sure
any other ideas.

Logic seems to dictate that a ball with an asymmetric core would still seek its preferred spin axis, so pin-on-pap wouldn't exactly give you the response you mention. The preferred spin axis and your PAP would need to align.

If you want to take the core out of the equation, why mess with an asymmetrical core?  Also consider, the core will still have some affect, namely the low Rg of the core. If the low Rg of the core is low, it will rev sooner and faster. If the low Rg of the core is high, it will rev later and slower.

Cover plays a bigger role and cover changes are a great way to tune these types of drills.

that is what I was thinking to go with something symmetrical..

I know a pin on axis is stable and will be on the low rg..

I did it with a Jazz and it is a very nice tournament piece to have. I put 2000 Abralon on it and nice for even straighter house shots.....

Where is your weight hole on that thing.. Does the Jazz and a very long pin to cg with that core...

That is the kind of thing I'm talking about .. I wanted something with a stronger cover so I could go really dull and strong or really shine it up for some more length...

I think medium to strong covers work best with that layout. The layout can be subject to weak and flat 10's. Weak covers would make that worse

The Jazz cover is not STRONG per say but I have added 1000 Abralon and can easily handle a fari amount of oil. My weight hole is drilled right through the pin and some of the CG. I did a 1" pin so it is a true pin on axis drilling. In my opinion the ball relies on the cover and depends what surface I have on the ball and hard to tell if it takes the core out of play because there is not much core to begin with.
