why would a bowlers ball be bouncing at release?

just started to notice a friend of mines ball is bouncing/hopping when it hits the lane, hasnt dont that before just recently, any ideas???
also his thumb isnt loose.

More knee bend in the last two steps and "sitting" into the shot on the last step rather than "standing up on it" or bending over prior to release. 

A good example of a nice flat spot in the swing (both players):

he had a back issue that messed with his left sliding leg, could that have developed into a bad habit causing this problem?

Thumb hole too big (or wrong pitches), causing the thumb to clear early, resulting in dropping?

I normally lay the ball down early and seemingly quiet, but there was one house i bowled at that seemed to not have a lot of support underneath the front part of the lanes where, not only me, but everyone else's ball did a quick double dribble when it hit the lane. it was interesting to say the least.

He said it doesnt feel like hes dropping it at all getting good lay down on the lanes, he may be standing higher at foul line than he used too....also all his balls do it.

The only time my ball bounces is when I'm too low.  I've never had it bounce when I was too upright.

Steep on the down swing and no flat spot as DP3 said in the first response.  Poor ball fit can also be an attribute but it's more the steep down swing and not staying flat enough thru the bottom of the  swing.

BTW....having a longer flat spot does not mean you dump or feed the ball on the lane at the foul line either.  You still have to be aggressive thru the ball.  Modern reactives don't need to be yacked on at the bottom they need to be fed out on to the lane.  Even Mika who gets the ball out on to the lane further than most has a long flat spot and the ball does not double dribble.

too long a slide can cause a double dribble, also, in some housed the approaches starts to drop and the edge of the lane/foul line will be slightly raised up if the ball is released at that point it will cause to bounce in the air.
