Finally forced to switch hands
« on: March 28, 2016, 10:36:44 AM »
I have posted about switching hands in the past, but I don't feel like I have a choice anymore. Last night during league, I was part of the way through the third game and I felt something pop in my forearm and my thumb started hurting and tingling. Had to go find my wrist strap and brace to finish off the night. I have had this issue in the past, which is why have considered it before, though I have never acted on it. Anybody have any tips on switching hands? I think I am going to have a storm rocket drilled up first

Possum

Take advantage of the specials as much as you can.

Also, don't get frustrated. Remember, this is better than quitting...right? For me it is

I still prefer weaker equipment even though my speed and revs are in good shape.  Backends on the left side are stronger so you generally don't need a ton of hook or a strong move on the back to get things done.

Is it normal for a right hand drilled ball to not finish through the pins when thrown left handed? I threw 3.5 games left handed tonight and couldn't get the ball to finish well. I am not sure if it was the drilling on each ball or if was an issue with not being able to get out of the ball clean. I am starting to feel like practicing with an ill fitting ball will create bad habits at this point and be counter productive

That is entirely possible.  If your pin to PAP was about 3-4 inches for RH, using it with your LH may put it at 5-6 inches.  I would be more worried about causing an injury to a joint or tendon due to the fit being off.

I'm not a driller, but that's just my thought.

Absolutely Possum. If you have a short pin to PAP right handed, that makes for a very long pin to PAP left handed. When I want something to go long, you add pin to PAP length. I remember drilling up a Pearl Boss back in the late 90s before we knew about dual angles and all this other technology stuff and we put the pin directly in my track. Ball went FOREVER back then. People were looking at the ball and saw the pin on the left of my grip (I was right handed at the time) and thought I was throwing someone elses ball as they did not understand pin positions, etc. For a lefty, the ball was almost drilled "leverage" and would have been super strong.

And I agree with IT. Unless you get several leftys on your pair, you have clean backends, and on house shots, that means lots of movement. When I start league night, I might be able to use my Raven Attack, and if I do, by the middle to end of the first game I am already considering balling down because it is just too much ball/reaction. I have my Orange/Black Ogre and Warlock Hybrid out next and if you look, they both have very high RGs and diffs in the .02s....

I think that is why we both suggested a Pitch Black. Controllable cover to start out with, high RG, low diff.

The main house I bowl in only strips the lanes completely on Tuesdays and the back 10 or 15 feet on Thursdays. The rest of the time, oil is on top of oil. On my Sunday team, I have a high rev left handed no thumb bowler that throws a bad intentions and a first blood. 500 grit is his surface of choice on Sunday nights if that gives you an idea of what I will be bowling on.

Well...let us know how it goes regardless of the route you go. There are not many of us that switched hands, so it is always good to talk to others with a similar perspective.

I switched from right to left a little over a year ago, after a wrist injury.  It's been a lot of fun relearning the game from the left side, after having bowled 30+ years right handed.  Like others here, I would recommend a weaker or higher RG ball initially.  I did myself more harm than good by jumping into a strong ball too soon.  My only real tip is don't push yourself to get good again too quickly.  I've found that I really have to focus on re-learning the little things again, the things that most long time bowlers don't even have to thing about anymore.  When I take my time and focus on getting the little things right, I bowl well.  When I try to just turn on cruise control (like I used to do as a righty), I just fall apart.

Got my rocket drilled up yesterday! After a little bit of tweaking on the thumb hole, the ball fits amazingly. I had some issues carrying the 7 pin, but I think that was because of trying to play a breakpoint a little too far outside for that shot. I also had my right hand remeasured. It appears that my hand has grown a little and my thumb is a bit more off to the side than it use to be, causing my issues

So how was your timing, and how much different was it to be ending with your other foot and throwing with your other arm?

It was a huge mind trip at first for me. I had to reverse everything and after 20 years of bowling one way, old habits are tough to break.

I have played with left handed over the years. It wasn't terrible for me to switch. Timing is reasonably good. I'm having some issues with atrocious shot making, but that is just something that will come together in time I believe

Threw my first 3 left handed games at my main house using the rocket last night. I don't have any videos at this point in time, but a friend told me that I was losing a lot of my accuracy because I was stutter stepping in the third step of my four step approach. I concentrated on making that step more even and I feel really smooth now. One thing I have noticed so far is that my mistakes seem to be magnified on the left side of the lane. Shots do not recover as well when leaked outside and the ball doesn't have any hold to the inside.

Possum

That is all part of the deal. And something else that will pop up is when you try something to fix something, you are going to "break" something else that will need fixed down the road. I dealt with that for years. It is getting better now.

My mistakes were magnified as well just because your release and timing (for me) was so far off on some attempts. Whereas right handed, the timing is close enough that the issue in release or timing is minimal, but not now.

Keep working on it, you will get there.

I really feel like I have potential left handed. Just have to keep working hard. The amazing news is that I had my right hand remeasured when I had my rocket drilled. My span was measured at a decent length longer than what my equipment was drilled. My hand has apparently grown over the last couple years, causing it to be in a bind. Because my fit had been the same for so long, I never noticed it fitting poorly. Last night I threw my refitted sinister and it felt amazing. No pain other than the continual ache
