Looking for suggestions for a new ball to take to Reno
« on: March 21, 2016, 03:36:21 PM »
Hi all,

I am looking to purchase one or maybe two new balls to complete my current lineup and take to Reno for nationals this year. This is my first time going, so I'm not really sure what to expect. I'm about 15 MPH, 300-350 RPM, Mid track bowler.  My current lineup is listed below. Thanks in advance for all your input.

Defiant Soul, pin under bridge @ 1000
Revolt Vengeance, pin above bridge @ box finish
Octane Burn, pin next to ring finger @ box finish
Spare ball

Something that's in the medium oil range with a smooth reaction like a Venom Shock or Storm IQ Tour Solid. I like solid covers for some control on tougher shots

I like SVs suggestions but I would like to add one more...the Blue Warlock XV from Visionary. Might be a small company, but that ball is crazy good on lower volumes, fresh backends, lighter oil, etc. Longer oil or heavy volumes - put it away. From what I have seen so far out of Reno, the Blue Warlock XV ball should play.

Shock is definitely on the list of options. Was also thinking maybe a Fight for medium and something like a Paradox or Lock maybe for something more on the heavy side??

I actually think you'd have a pretty good look between the Soul, Vengeance, Shock, and Burn.

Id probably start with the Shock and throw that most of the time. The patterns are 38/39 feet so hook shouldn't really be a problem especially if it plays similar to last years pattern.

If the shot breaks down you could switch to the Vengeance or Burn, if you see some carrydown you could ball up to the Soul

As SV said, hook is not going to be a problem. Don't load up on heavy volume balls or longer pattern balls with super strong layouts.

How do you all feel about the IQ tour 30 compared to the shock for the given shot? Better or worse?? About the same??

I don't like pearls on fresh surfaces. I think you need a solid and take the surface up if you are worried about it being too early. With a pearl, there are slip agents in the cover. A sanded pearl at 600 is not the same as a sanded solid at 600.

If you don't like solids, split the difference and get a hybrid. Better than a straight pearl in my book on the fresh.

I personally wouldn't. No one around me has the IQ 30, pro shop has had one since before it came out and it's still sitting there.

When I bowled on last years pattern recently which is very similar to this years, my best look was with a Brunswick Brute Strength at 2000 abralon and I balled up to a Motiv Revolt Havoc moving inside a little bit

My stats are similar to yours, that's the only reason why I mention it

Thanks for the info on the iQ. I don't have a problem with solids even though I end up with mostly hybrids and pearls! Just trying to explore the best options for the shot. I am leaning towards the Shock but I just wanted to see if there were maybe some better options I wasn't thinking of.

If you join the Visionary test staff program, you have access to Ravens and Warlocks for $100 SHIPPED direct from Visionary. You could get a Raven Attacks and a Warlock XV for $200 shipped and have everything but Super Heavy/Long and Dry covered between the 2 balls.
