Starting new "fun" league... need suggestions.
« on: January 12, 2009, 12:59:33 PM »
I am starting in a new "fun" league this week. It is a midnight league on thursday nights. I have bowled in this league the last couple of years and enjoy it. I work second shift and this is my only real chance to bowl during the week. I get a little cranky only being able to bowl on Sundays.
So here is the issue. This new league is composed mostly of first time league bowlers in the 18-22yo range, that are there as much to drink too much and socialize as anything. I did not have anyone interested or able to bowl on this league with me so I had to beg a spot on a team with a couple of young guys that I fear are not very serious about bowling. I can see myself becoming frustrated by this pretty quick. I ave ~200 and want to do my best everytime I shoe up.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to handle the frustration of bowling with alot of people that are less serious about bowling than myself?
I hope you can understand what I'm saying...

Dont worry about them, take this as a test of your mental game. Just worry about your game and nothing else. Plus Enjoy yourself

Relax and have a good time. It is a fun league. The only time you need to be serious is when your on the approach. Once off who cares.

Take a few double-shots of your favorite hard liquor before putting your shoes on, then guzzle beer with them the rest of the night.  Try throwing the ball between your legs for the first game, go "around the world" during the second game, and end with a challenge to your teammates to see who can throw light houseballs the hardest for the last game.

After bowling, go to Denny's for breakfast.

Treat it as practice - and think of it as "leadership by example".
Once your teammates have a chance to see you bowl seriously, yet have fun, they may decide there's more to life than drinking.

However - make sure that they know you're there to bowl, but that you want to have fun, too. Otherwise, it'll be unpleasant.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.
Believe me I'll be drinking.hehe. I drink double Jim Beam and cokes all night, but as I don't get out of work until midnight they have a headstart on me!
I will definately enjoy myself as I am happy just to be able to get a extra few games in during the week.
I think the thing I am concerned with most is having to wait on people that are not ready to bowl when it is their turn, not understanding lane courtesy, etc.
Maybe I'm just worrying too much about what might happen, maybe once I explain things (nicely of course) they will fall in line.
I hadn't thought about bowling with my left hand, hell I don't throw it that good righty!

Maybe you turn the tables. If they are really into the drinking than the bowling, just make it a game.  A strike=two swallows of beer, 1 spare=1 swallow
an open= NO BEER.  That might keep there game on the bowling as well....
