Is it true that it is better to use a spare ball / low flaring ball to get proper oil rings to measure PAP off of? I'm just curious because the lowest flaring ball I have besides the spare ball is my Tornado. Should I use my Tornado or just use my spare ball (target zone) to find my PAP.. Or does it not really matter and just use one of my higher flaring balls?

Spare ball is the best. Throw it right down the mound of oil in the middle instead of trying to line up for a strike. The Tornado wouldn't be a bad choice if you didn't own plastic. High flaring balls can actually flare in the air, so your first oil ring might not be correct.

i know to use a plastic ball, wat ways r there of finding it. i don't have the equipment to be exact right now. so wat ways r there to be somewhat close?

NO. Your pap will be different with a different grip.

No. Your pap would not be in the same location throwing a conventionally drilled ball as it would throwing a fingertip ball. I personally think it's most important to use a ball that fits exactly the same as you'll want any balls you may drill in the future to fit.

I've thrown multiple balls of varying coverstocks and cores to confirm my pap locatioon, and they've all measured out the same. I even throw a piece of white tape on the pap and throw it again just to make sure that I've got it marked correctly.

You would want it drilled the same way that you are going to normally throw.
In this case plug it, and drill it fingertip.

i used my chainsaw to find my pap my spare is a storm ice didnt want my driller to hurt his eyes. lol

USE THE MOST NON-FLARING BALL YOU HAVE. Use your normal delivery and throw it in the highest volume of oil you can to create an oil ring on the ball.

Then, on the positive side of the ball, draw three intersecting lines from one side of the oil ring to the farthest place on the other side of the ring. The point where these three lines intersect should be your pap.

Also, if you have a non-flaring ball, you can find your pap through trial and error, but the technique is simple. Get a piece of tape that is highly contrasted to the color of the ball so that it is easily visible as the ball travels down the lane and place it on the ball during subsequent shots.

Watch the tape closely and move it closer to the center of rotation each time in small increments. When you find the spot where the tape seems stationary with no wobble as the ball travels down the lane, you have placed the tape on your pap. Then, you can take it in the shop and just get the measurements off the ball.

Either of these methods should work. Also, you can get an oil ring on your ball, then place it in a spinner so that the positive side of the ball is up and the oil ring rotates perfectly perpindicular to the table. Then, while the ball is spinning, mark the top center of the rotating ball. That should be your pap as well. You could do the tape along with this method, as a redundancy if you wished, just to make sure they were the same point.

if you don't have an armadillo or a trisect.. their are a couple of things you can do..
guestimate a line perpendicular to your first oil ring. draw this line with a wax pencil. Draw 3 or 4 lines like this from various spots on your first flare ring.. where these lines intersect is the PAP.
After that you can take a piece of tape and put it on this spot. Throw another shot.(remember to throw the ball like it is your first strike shot) If the tape stays stationary then you have found your PAP. If it wobbles , use trial and error and move it around slightly until you get it to be stable.
you can probably just skip the line drawing and guess the center of your first oil ring..

Buy a used plastic ball, or even a new one to use for spares.

I would rather spend $20-$50 bucks up front than get that new high performance ball and drill it wrong.
