Fine-tuning your game...
« on: June 06, 2004, 11:12:12 AM »
I consistently average between 190 and 200. I'm having a difficult time increasing my average. I think I've reached the point where it's time to fine-tune parts of my game. What is the best way to approach fine-tuning one's game? Making adjustments and accuracy are my biggest problems. Is this something only a coach can assist with? When do you draw the line between self-teaching and additional advice/assistance? This is kind of off subject: what are the advantages and disadvantages to practicing alone? In addition, what are the advantages/disadvantages to practicing with one or two others.

If making adjustments and accuracy are your biggest areas you need to improve upon, you need to develop practice sessions around these two areas of your game. The advantage to doing this alone would be you know what you need to work on and can place 100% focus on this, however the advantage to practicing with one or two others would be the ability to simulate league/tournament pressure situations easier than if you were to do all the bowling alone.

For accuracy I have spend practice sessions where I play one game focusing on hitting straight up first arrow, then another game straight up second arrow, the third game straight up third arrow, another game swinging from 5th arrow to 3rd arrow, a following game throwing on an angle from the gutter as in a frozen rope to the pocket. I don't focus on the score- I give myself a point if I hit my target or a zero if I don't and I factor so many points out of 10 for that game. As far as making adjustments you just have to pay more attention to when you see strike balls hitting light or high and then making the correct moves with your feet and eyes to correct the problem. I'm guessing going onto Ron Clifton's http://www.bowl4fun.com site would be a good start for some practice drills.

Let us know how the progress goes.

I would highly recommend a coach, or at a minimum, a video session.
Lay out your agenda before you start practice - 5 shots over the 5 board, 5 over 10, 5 over 15, etc... spare drills (10 pin, 6 pin, 3 pin, head pin, 2 pin, 4 pin, 7 pin).
Then video tape the whole session - preferably with someone else holding the camera, who can start recording while focusing on your approach/hand position, then following the ball trajectory at least till the arrows.
Review the session with a scorecard of your pre-determined agenda - be honest.
Then you'll know what you have to work on - it'll be really obvious.

And as a side note - keep the video, and review it again the next time you do the video session. It'll be easy to see what's changed.
