finished Friday night league. walk in my apartment door. look down into my bowling bag i keep in living room(yes a bachelor for sure) and WTF my storm prodigy has a crack almost all the way round. starting at the thumb hole with slug. that ball's been sitting in my apartment. not exposed to heat of car and still cracked. that was my go to ball for heavier volumes which is not any league I'm in right now. course this ain't the first ball to do that just sitting in my apartment. any views as to causes?

In general:
I've heard that many balls don't like just sitting there, that you should rotate them every once in a while. How long has it been sitting there?

Is your apartment subject to large swings in temperature and/or humidity over the course of a day?
(There are 3 parts to most balls: coverstock, filler and core. All 3 are made of different materials. They expand and contract at different rates. If the expansion/contraction is too great, one will separate from the other. That can result in cracking.)

The other part is mistakes made by the driller in his treatment of the ball can over time results in small to large cracks: using bits that are not sharp, drilling too close to the pin, not beveling all holes, using too much super glue, etc.

i have had more than 7 balls crack.there are many reason as you stated the crack.the biggest reason also is cheaper cover stocks also.they can^t go up to much on price so they cut corners where they can.think about this.i have had the balls crck in my room.i have older track equipment i mean pre1990or 1992.in that era.i measured the coverstocks.they are twice as thick as the new ones.they were the price then as now.so they had to cut corners.true the outer and inner of the ball swells and contracts.that is mainley what causes them to crack.i knopw someone who lives here in florida with me.he never takes care of his bowling balls.keeps in trunk or in the garage.he has never had one crack yet.mostly luck i guess.maybe the coverstock batch on his was thicker that day who knows.i have had track contact me before because i blasted them on this foruom for making crappy balls.they made it right with me.but it is depressing to spend that much on balls and have them crack.i have had a ball rack built.it holds 27  balls.have a total of 32 now.if you dont take care of them they will not take care of you.

The thickness of the shell does not have any affect as people think.  Its a misconception.  I have asked manufacturers about this.  I received a reply back about it.  I can paste some information from it if anyone asks.

I haven't run into any issues with this, but did see a VG Nano at my driller's shop that was completely cracked once.  It wasn't even vertical...it cracked horizontally close to the pin.  The person had it drilled somewhere else and then brought it to her shop to claim the warranty on it.  Not sure how that worked out for him.

In my case, I like to rotate the arsenal and throw the stuff I don't use as often periodically (my 919C, Vital Energy, and Brick come to mind).  This way, they get some use, and are not just sitting.  On top of that, I may find an additional way to use a ball that I haven't thought of.

'There is a misconception out there that thicker means better when its actually reverse.  Thinner shells have more surface contact area with the core, more surface contact results in a stronger bond which reduces core separation and shell cracking.'

Over the past few years I have had 6 balls crack. I keep them in the house, temp never range's to far. I have a friend that keeps all his stuff in his car year round and never had any issue. we are in the Chicago area so you know our temp range.

I take real good care and he can carless and my stuff cracks
