finger grips with reverse pitch
« on: February 02, 2015, 12:23:15 PM »
I've changed my finger pitches to 3/8 & 5/8 inch reverse pitch and having a little concern with grip installation.  Is best way to glue pad side first, then push nail side in and glue?  I'm considering dropping grips as I'm a little concerned they won't stay in very well with this much reshaping.

I changed my finger pitches to 1/2 away several years ago to help promote a cleaner release.  I haven't seen any problems with grips on any ball in that time.

^^^^ me either..

before, when I went from vise to turbos, I had to trim the bottom of the inserts since the holes were shallow the grips were longer. when cut clean, the insert sat in the hole flush. but with turbos inserts, I was changing them out fast than I did with vise. So i went back to using vise - also, turbos were to soft of a feel.

Yes, put a drop of glue on the front side and work your way around the hole pushing the grip flush with the ball.  You should be able to get away with about 3 drops of glue around the insert.  If you have smaller fingers a scratch awl can help to pull the thicker inserts down from the inside.  Just make sure you stab the insert lower than your finger will touch.

You can cut a small notch on each side of the bottom of the grip, like an upside down V shape. Then when you press the high side flush, it will help the grip flex more.

I use LocTite gel super glue, it sets up slower than the liquid glue and gives more time to get the grip set correctly.  Line the grip up as you want it with the lowest part set even with the top of the hole.  Push the grip back and place a small drop as low as you can get it in the hole.  Give that a few seconds to set up then go to the opposite side, pull it back and place a drop on the hole as far down as you can get it.  Quickly push the grip down to level with the top of the hole and press the grip against the side of the hole and hold it for about 30 seconds.  If necessary, add a small drop between the areas already glued.  --  JohnP

If you're using grips with that much away and go to no grips you'll prolly lose your feel...going from grips to no grips alone is a feel issue...
I've drilled for players with an inch away and never had issues glueing

I just drilled up a test ball with reverse pitches on the fingers and no grips. Am i suppose to change my thumb pitches also to make up for the finger pitches?? or am i suppose to shorten my span??

No you make too many changes to gauge what you're doing

When I used a lot of reverse finger pitch I would use a sharp blade and trim the grip flush to the ball.  One could then use acetone to smooth out any rough cuts.  I've been told to not force the grip since it will bind up resulting in a tighter fit.

I like the reverse pitch in the fingers no complaints on that but when I do it I feels like my thumb is in an awkward position like the thumb nail touching back wall

Possibly because of no grips you're subconsciously squeezing due to possibly the feeling of losing it

Yea that what I thought because a few months I stop beveling my thumb holes to keep it sharp to remind me of no grabbing. Might just be all mental
