Finger Insert Remover
« on: December 30, 2008, 05:31:44 AM »
Can anyone recommend a good finger insert removal tool.  I tried using the Pro Grip model in the past and wasn't pleased about the amount of residue left behind.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Innovative makes a good one that we use in the shop that I'm at, but depending on the glue used you are going to get residue. We use a bevel sander to get the rest of it.

The innovative insert remover is really durable and sharp.

This is a good one.  It also has sharp edges that can scrape residue off the inside of the hole.

Is there a glue that leaves less residue?  I was using loc-tite but I am open to suggestions here as well.

Thanks all!

The trade-off with going away from Loctite is that I can do so many more projects with one tube of Loctite (the gel, not the liquid) that I'd rather deal with the residue. And, Loctite gel is higher quality and so efficient ... only a few drops and it's in there for good. Some of the other brands, I've had problems with them releasing (particularly on slugs, even ones I roughed up first).

Couple of things I've found that take out residue: First I use a draftsman's razor (looks like a ballpoint pen but has interchangeable razor blades at the end -- I found mine at an AutoZone for about $5). Then I use a standard rasp file. Then finish it off with the bevel sander. Entire process takes 3 minutes, tops.

The stuff you're using is fine.  Just use very little half a drop (or less) around each side of the insert, and do the same thing for the front.  You don't even need to glue the top.
