Whats your adjustment?
« on: December 29, 2008, 08:20:26 AM »
I had a lot of trouble carrying the 10 pin early on in the season leaving anywhere for 7-12 a night.  I moved back on the approach about 4 or 5 inches and no more 10 pins. (only leave 2-3 a night)  I was just curious what other people do to cure the "10 pin blues."

I don't really do adjustments when I'm leaving 10 pins, I just throw the ball pretty much the same...never understood a lot of the things bowlers do, everything from placing their toe on the EXACT same spot on the exact same board everytime when they setup their approach, to bringing 6 different balls to the bowling alley every night, just don't get it...

Work in a box that is diamond shaped about 4 inches in each direction starting with 1 inch moves, if that dont work then ball change time to something else.

Then keep repeating this method until I want to hit myself in the head with the bowling ball at full speed.

Purchase a ball that matches up to my style and the conditions so I don't leave ten pins anymore.

On the occasional ten pin I'll adjust like mrbowlingnut mentioned, possibly taking my head off sooner.

You must enjoy leaving the 10 pin over and over and over again until the lanes dry up and you start leaving 4 pins and splits instead.

um, if your leaving (7-12)  10pins a night, I'd be looking at if the ball is using up its energy before it hits the pocket.   A easy move would be to move deeper into the oil, and use the same break point.

i'll be honest that i leave on average maybe 2 or 3 tenpins per 3 games.   But I also normally play a deeper line (4th arrow) But even when I play up 2nd arrow, I rarely leave alot of 10pins.    But it might just be, cuz I have alot of revs and use Storm equipment, but IDK.

Another thing, is try using a ball that stores its energy longer.

If I'm leaving flat tens I'll move 1-1/2 boards left.

If I'm leaving ringing tens I'll move 1-1/2 boards right.

Of course, it would have to happen in either case at least twice before I move.

It all depends on what I am feeling that night. Some nights moving forward or back may help some nights moving left or right. There are nights that the ball goes in the bag and pull out a different one. It all depends.

Curious how do you line up on the approach?

Do you pick up your ball off the rack, from there turn to the pins, and that is your starting point?

10's are about entry angle and retaining energy at the pins. The clue as to what is going on is watching the ball go through the pins and where the ball falls off the end of the pin deck. Below is based on being right handed. And this is old school knowledge that still works today. Of course todays ball's have much more power and bowlers today have much more speed, but I believe the information below is still valid (at least for me). As well, you must also determine topical issues such as off spot pins, bad pins and lane surface (such as levelness). Sometime topical issues can not be overcome by specific players while others it helps.

The goal to great carry is to have to ball not deflect right or left but travel straight through the pins on the same trajectory as the entry angle toward the pins.  The ball should hit the pocket on ~17.5 and fall off of the pin deck at ~18. If the ball deflects right (an falls off the pin deck ~16.5) you will typically leave a flat 10. If the ball goes left you stand to leave an 8 or 9 and even a 4.

Now for ringing 10's where the ball appears to go straight through the pins it is about entry angle. Somewhere between ~4/5 degree entry angle's will result in ringing 10's on a consistant basis. So you must either increase the entry angle or decrease the entry angle to change the ringing 10. This is usually done by moving your target several boards left of right (and your feet appropriately where moving left will create more entry angle and moving right will lessen entry angle).

Half a board to my left with my feet.  I am a lefty, so a righty would go half a board to the right.  Works very well for me.
