Ball Weight
« on: May 29, 2010, 12:32:23 PM »
I'm sure this question has been asked many times before, but I have to ask it.  On average, how much ball weight is taken out of a ball when it is drilled with a standard 3 holes?  I know the weight hole can definitely change things like it is supposed to.  I just roll 15 lb stuff mostly and found a ball that is 15.5 lbs and wonder if its going to seem a bit heavy.  Thanks for the help yall!

It depends on a couple of factors.

Since I use thumb and finger inserts, drilling my 3 holes removes between 2.0 and 2.25 ounces of top. If you use no inserts, drilling will remove less. Each of the the 3 can be drilled deeper to remove more weight. A weight hole can easily remove 3/4 - 1+ ounce of weight.

When you say "standard three holes", do you mean conventional? If so, around 2.5 ounces. So your ball would end up about 15lb 2.5 oz. If finger tip, it will take out slightly less. I have done an experiment to see how much weight can be taken out of a ball by drilling all the holes very deep and adding an x-hole very large. The very most I could get out was about 5 ounces. Keep in mind, when you do this, you alter the core dynamics.

Real world, I generally see 2.5-3.0 ounce difference after drilling.  That's with inserts and thumb slug.

How detailed do we want to get?

Here is what I came up with before:
quote:

Using the weight removal chart as a reference: http://www.bowlingball.com/weight-hole-remove-chart.html

Turbo quad inserts - 31/32" x 1.75" hole = 1.050 oz per finger hole., so 2.1 oz is removed for both fingers. I'm not sure how much the inserts weigh, so I don't know how much to add back in for those. If anybody has that info it would be great, if not I'll have to see if I can get that info tonight.

1 1/4" thumb slug - 1.25" x 3" hole = ~2.70 oz. Again, not sure how much a drilled slug weighs to add that back in.

Using those numbers, that's removing almost 5 oz with the drilling.  But you need to add back in the insert and slug weight.

I just went out and weighed some inserts and slugs, and this is what I found:

Turbo quad inserts ~ 0.4-0.6 oz.  Those are sizes 11 and 21, so average 0.5.  Obviously will be slightly higher or lower depending on your finger size.

Vise 1 1/4" insert (urethane) ~ 2.2 oz before drilling.   I have custom inserts made with plug material and a 27/32" hole.  Ebonite clear plug material weighs ~ 0.8 oz, while the quick plug material is slightly heavier at ~ 1.0 oz.

So I guess the numbers work out - you take out almost 5 oz with drilling, and add back in ~ 2.0 oz with inserts and slug and end up with removing ~ 3 oz.
