Finger pain/issues
« on: July 18, 2013, 09:27:52 PM »
Hey all,

I posted this on another forum but figured I'd ask here too in order to get as many ideas and opinions as possible.

For a month or so, I've gone back to my old span and pitches. My ball roll is amazing and is promotes the down-lane reaction I like to see. The only problem is that it's tearing the crease of my middle finger to shreds. I literally have a gash just further up my hand from the inserts digging into it at release. It looks like it was sliced open by a dull knife. Bowled 8 games at a tournament Sunday with no issues then couldn't manage 2 games of league last night without it tearing open and bleeding. The middle finger gives me the majority of the pain and trouble but my ring finger feels a little sharp as well and sometimes feels like it "wants" to cut in even though it doesn't usually.

I know I need to change my grip but I'm afraid to lose the ball roll I love so much. Effortless revs and speed and I feel like I can make the ball do anything I want. Overally, I feel like the grip is close to perfect. Is there a pitch/span change that will let me keep this same ball roll with none of the painful side effects?

Right now my full span is
MF span: 4 3/16+
MF pitch: 7/16 left, 0 rev
RF span: 4 1/4"
RF pitch: 7/16 right, 0 rev
Thumb pitch: 0 r/l, 0 rev
I do use oval grips

Minus the pain, I like the way my hand sits in the ball and I don't want to sacrifice that aspect of feel and the versatility that I have; I'm just tired of my fingers being sawed in half.

My first thought was to add about 1/4" to 1/2" reverse in both the fingers to decrease the angle that they have to bend and get around the edge. My second thought was to try vacu-grips and keep the pitches the same. My third thought was to go gripless and just bevel the top out a tiny bit so I'm guaranteed to not catch a sharp ledge.

Basically, I'm at a total loss of what to do. I'm afraid to make drastic changes that could negatively impact my ball roll. The last thing I want to do is to go from being able to play anywhere between the 1 board and 6th arrow to knuckling it up 3rd arrow at 15mph and 5 revs. What's so weird for me is that the ball feels so good sitting in my hand and I still rip open. It's like I'm trying to ask you guys to help me create the same feel with a different feel!

Anyways, I hope that you guys might be able to help me out a little bit. I appreciate any and all input.

Thank you

I'd try 1/4 reverse in both fingers.  I think 1/2 might be a little much

I know from personal expirence that when my fingers did what you were discribing, I was burying my fingers in the ball   Might want to look at that as well

If your using the easiest thing to try first is to try a different brand of inserts.  They are all slightly different shape and some are softer than others and if you have dry skin the pull on you fingers from the tackiness sure isn't helping your problem.  Also, if you use the "lift" side of the insert, try flipping it to the oval.

If you've been using inserts for a long time taking them out will be a big change.  It won't make you knuckle it up 15, but initially you will definitely feel like your fanning on it.

Anything you change will affect your ball roll slightly.  If you don't want to risk that happening patch the creases of your fingers before you start.  Be aware if you do this, if you're splitting from the friction instead of the contact you may split further up your fingers at the edge of the patch.

I agree with both.  And it depends on how the grips are treated too.  Grips are all slightly beveled or rounded at the top, but I've seen some shops put them in so far and then take a razor to cut them off flush with the ball, that creates a REALLY sharp edge, and not the way to go.  Changing grips would be the cheapest, easiest first stop.  However, the lack of reverse pitch in the fingers is staring at me, grips won't fix that, especially with 0 pitch in your thumb.  Without seeing your hand on the ball, I can't know for certain, but your specs look reasonable with the exception of the lack of reverse in the fingers, I would echo Brian saying that 1/4 would be a good place to start.  You do say though that your middle finger gives you the majority of the problems, and that may be because the span is longer to your middle finger, so you're going to be middle finger dominant.  Instead of using both fingers equally, you're most likely really relying on your middle finger to get the majority of the work done.  In what you said, you've got the right ideas and the right concept, it's just locking down what works for your hand.  Here are links to my videos on fit, this might help you out as well, particularly the story I've got in the second video, one of my buddies had a really similar problem with his fingers.

I'll also second itsallaboutme on the going to no grips thing, you'll feel like you're losing it initially if you aren't used to it.  And once you get used to grips, going backwards might be rougher on your fingers.  The less bevel the better.  If you're cutting yourself, it's because you're using the creases of your fingers to get the leverage instead of the pads like it should be.  Adding reverse will bring the fingerholes back to contact with your finger pads.  It sounds like you're pretty versatile, and it sounds like the top end of your rev rate when you need to crank it is pretty high.  Reverse in the fingers sounds exactly like what you need.  HOWEVER, you will have to make small adjustments, most likely to the span, to keep your fit balanced.  If you go reverse in the fingers, it's going to make the span feel shorter, so be aware of that.  I don't like making several adjustments to fit all at the same time, because if you go step by step you can put a fit together better, but I also realize that plugging a ball a million times is time consuming and expensive.  Spend some time with your pro shop guy on a fitting ball, I know it's hard to get a feel with a fitting ball, but you might be able to identify some things.  With 1/4 reverse in the fingers, I'm betting that an increase of 1/16 in each side of your span will be needed.
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

A finger joint that is stiff requires more reverse pitch, a reduction in span, or both.  How far will your first joints (closest to the nail) bend without forcing?  --  JohnP
