'Impossibilities' on the first shot
« on: January 29, 2007, 11:18:02 AM »
After just reading and replying to the post "Made the 7-10 split, but...", I got thinking about whether there are any pin combinations that would be "impossible" to leave when shooting at a full rack.  It SEEMS it would be impossible to leave the 1-2-3-4-6-7-10 standing but take out any combination that would include the 5, 8, and 9.  Am I right about this?

I'm not sure it counts because I was practicing 10 pins, but I took the 2-8-10 out of a full rack.  Hit the 10, bounced out of the back (very unusual at this house) and hit the 8 which apparently fell straight forward only hitting the 2.  I guess I left a 1-3-4-5-6-7-9.  I've only made the 2-8-10 one other time in my whole life.  Maybe this way is as good as any other?

I've seen the 1/2/3 left by a regular league bowler.

I've left the 1/7/8, and made it!

There aren't many splits that have six pins standing, but I've both seen and left the 3-6-9-10-4-7.  Both of us are righties.

Last weekend in league I was about to witness a 7-8-9-10 leave after a team mate's totally screwed up spinner release - but finally, the front mess of pins pushed the 8 and 9 backwards into the pit, so a 7-10 was left. Was strange hit, and the pinfall was even weirder!
