Title: Finger Taping?
Post by: Elimeno Pee on February 22, 2013, 07:55:20 PM
This might sound crazy, but is it legal to put Tape in the finger holes?  i have a ball i might bring outta retirement cause i'm throwing the ball a bit different than i used to, and i never really found the ball back then.  Took it out practicing today, and the original Black Widow is just what i've been looking for outta my other stuff.  Only issue is, i have recently switched to Inserts, and the bridge on the Widow is to narrow to drill them out, and i'm not able to pay for a plug / redrill right now.

I do hav access to to a Rasp, Bevel, and Sander, and could open the finger holes up and put tape in there to help hold.

Is this idea a legal one?

Your driller should be able to drill the fingers out by setting the bit to leave the bridge intact.  He'll probably start with a 15/16" bit and then overdrill it with 31/32".  I do a lot of these, it's not a problem.  If he also sets the bit to leave the top of the holes intact the spans should come out about the same.  --  JohnP

I have also stretched my span by about 1/8-1/4. so it won't be perfect by anymeans.

A lot of guys that don't use inserts will deliberately drill the holes a little big just because they like the feel they get with tape.

Ask the driller to line the bit up with the front of the hole.  That will increase the span by the thickness of the finger grip, usually 1/8 - 1/4".  --  JohnP

I drill my fingers slightly bigger and use tape.  It's just personal preference with the feel compared to inserts.  Certainly legal to do.

How often do you need to change the tape?

Not often.  I just use my Storm white tape most of the time and it holds up really well.
