finger tip or conventional grip?
« on: February 22, 2017, 12:42:19 PM »
My boy wanted to be like blemo and osku when he was 5 to 6 years old. It was his first exposure to bowling. Since then he has not touched a bowling ball till recently. Now at 13 yrs old, he is taller than me. He fits my 10.5 SST8's and his span is very close to mine. Only he has skinny fingers.

So we started at the foul line, got him in a post position and to swing the ball back and forth freely to get the feel and the balanced at the line. This took some time for him to get used to. He was using a house balls and was dumping the balls into the channel. I gave him my own ball and he immediately did better. Kept the ball on the lane and even had marked and a double. He's hand was at the 6 o'clock position throughout the swing which is a plus.

I have two balls saved for him that I kept for over 6 years. The slingshot and twisted fury. Is it okay to start him with finger tip?

If you are going to use more advanced coaching techniques such as foul line drills and I assume some one and two step drills, (combined with his age) then I would just jump to fingertip.

If he was younger, 4-8 or so, then I would probably suggest conventional or somewhere in between.  But as a 13 year old, he will want to see the things other kids his age, and you, are doing and replicate it.

Yes, the "hook" is what he liked seeing once he used my ball.

Alright, finger tip it is.....

side note: When I was 13, I barely couldn't make my ball hook 2-3 boards (1986) While He hooks 5 plus boards without even trying. Another difference between us....Samantha Fox and Phoebe Cates were on my mind @ 13....... Him, it's video games like Overwatch (PS4 game) that is always on his mind.... At least he loves 80's music....from def leopard to Rick Ashley lol

Did you just Rick Roll us in word form?

And for the record, in 1986 I believe I was throwing a 12 pound conventional grip full-roller using a Yellow dot and covering boards off the left corner.  I was probably averaging 150 as a 12 year old doing that...

lol so that's what it means to "rick roll".....

if he does too much of what brad does he might break his thumb..... lol

there goes his career as a gamer.....but would be a future bowler w/o a thumb
