I am currently bowling a team competition - it's one of the big mixed scratch events of the year. 22 teams, 5 bowlers per team.
The team we bowled the first game had their big average bowler show up late. He got there in the 7th frame of the first game. Feelings were mixed - I'm curious to find out what your opinions are.

should he have:
1. been allowed to bowl the whole game, bowling the frames he missed.
2. been allowed to bowl from the time he arrived, with 0 for the first 6 frames but the remaining score counting,
3. not been allowed to bowl the first game at all and receive 0, or
4. been allowed to pace from the 7th frame on (score not counting).

I'll check back with the thread later, with the actual decision made by the tournament officials.

BTW - it is NOT a sanctioned tournament.

Thanks to everyone for their input. The decision of the tournament director was number 4 above. The team got 0 for their bowler for the first game. The director made this decision because a few years earlier a whole team was late, and their scores were 0 for the first game. So he used that as a precedent.

Turns out the 4 frames he missed didn't make any difference to the outcome of the tournament. He had a score of 54. Not that it matters any...

If it was non-sanctioned and no rule was in place, then I'd have to say he should be allowed to bowl the whole game, including the missed frames.

Was this the first time this individual ever bowled a tournament?

I would say no, so why did he/she not show up in time to bowl.
How do you not know what time you have to be at a tournament. Just another example of bowlers not taking care of their own business.

I don't understand why this guy was late.
Ric - they didn't let his score stand at the 54 - he got 0 for the game. So his actual tournament average after 2 was 150.
Wonder if he would have shot that second game if he didn't pace those 4 frames???

BTW - this guy is a regional player. And had the chance to spend the night at another bowler's place - just so he wouldn't be late.

What really amazed me about the whole thing was the attitude of one of his teammates. The guy was so mad about the whole thing he threatened to not bowl the tournament ever again. Of course, the teammate (not the guy who was late) and his whole team walked out a few years ago, so he's got a "history"...

In this case, it wasn't unavoidable. He overslept.

Am I confused .. same question two different answers ..

Does this indicate, since he DIDN'T stay with the other bowler, he had a distance to travel to make the tournament?
