Finish Position Advice
« on: November 15, 2011, 05:46:01 PM »
Yo! I need some help. Lately I've been working on having more knee bend and keeping my trail leg on the ground. Are there any tips you have to help me or drills I can do? Thanks in advance.

Can you post a video of yours? This would surely help!

As a suggestion: check if you bend your upper body forward during the release, compensating for the lack of knee bend. You should keep your body upright, lowering everything down through the knee bend. The position of your body CG is important here - if it is too far forward, you will rather bend over than slide, and also use the trailing leg somewhere in the air, windmilling, to keep balance up.

It can also be that you start your stance with straight legs and simply do not get the initial flexing reflex right, so that you keep the knee straight all the time.

As a tip: try shifting your body CG backwards, and start with your knees already flexed - as if you were about to sit down. It feels awkward, and you need some muscle in your legs, but this has helped me getting my overall body posture into better shape, creating a true slide, knee bend and more leverage at the release point. Not certain if this anything that helps you with your trouble, but maybe it's a point to check.

Dizzy,
Well thought out and written instructions. You definitely hit all the important points.  Did you make it up or find it out of a book.

Those that can do. Those that can't complain. Pimpin ain't easy, but it's mandatory.

Looking at your videos it looks to me like you have plenty of knee bend just before release.  The problem is that you pop up at the line in order to rip through the ball.  This causes everything to go up, including your trail leg.
I think just slowing down a little on the approach, and finding a good rhythm will help a bunch.

Thanks for all the tips! I'll definitely try these out next time I practice. Here's a video for people who are interested.

The second shot in that video has a pretty good view of my approach.

+1 on the popping up.  That was one of the things I also noticed.  I would work on that a bit but other than that, kneebend and everything looks really good.

I have to tell ya, you can definitely crank the hell out of the ball and make it look good.

With the speed of your approach and some other things going on, staying down is not really an option you have, it just doesn't fit into your game right now.

Lunges. You need to work on your leg strength to get a solid base to generate leverage in a more controlled manner.

I second dizzy's excellent advice:-
"As a suggestion: check if you bend your upper body forward during the release, compensating for the lack of knee bend. You should keep your body upright, lowering everything down through the knee bend. The position of your body CG is important here - if it is too far forward, you will rather bend over than slide, and also use the trailing leg somewhere in the air, windmilling, to keep balance up.

To add some slant of my own, try "locking" yourself in that release position until the ball has rolled over your mark.  This helps to stop you from wobbling around on the line and will help give you a consistent release, greater accuracy and that leverage on your release.

Quintessential personal experience - but only my humble, personal point of view.

I am no coach, but I am good at writing thing ;)

Potentially, slowning the feet down could be the ultimate answer. When you rush forward, your feet are much too early at the foul line - so, there's no need to bend your knees because you have to wait and fight with balance. You con only slide well when timing of feet and pendulum is in sync. If this does not match, many players revert to force and THINK they are power players - but it is just awful timing and turning IMHO at the wrong screw. "Fitting the game" has many facets, but one should be open enough to consider more profound flaws than just the lack of a bended knee. From my experience, there's most often more "behind" it. You need to cure this source of error, not the symptoms! And this can become pretty fundamental, what confronts the ego.
