Title: First family fun league and.....
Post by: xrayjay on June 19, 2017, 10:15:54 PM
After 4 years I joined a family fun league this summer and I'm enjoying it. I get a kick of the mentality of some bowlers.

1. Lanes are low volume and dry out fast due to humidity and heat - AC is not working well. A bowler sands his dull ball constantly because his ball doesn't hook. He tells my buddy there's a lot of oil outside...??? Lol

2. Guys bring 3 to 5 balls.. most are high end hookers.

3. "Got robbed" is prevalent!!

4. So many missed single pin spares of all kinds.

5. Smiles on everyone's face except that 198 ave. Bowler who blames the house for his lack of skills.

Scratch leagues can be a bit serious, these fun leagues are actually fun!!!

Every year I bowl a recreational league with friends. My teammates in that league have varied in average from 105 to 215. Winning the league isn't all that important, the prize fund is nearly flat. The only jackpot is a cheap pins over average that might turn $3 into $15 if you win.

It might be my most enjoyable league. There's a few hotheads, but people are mostly just happy to be there. End result - I bowl better too. Set my new high average in that league last year (233) and shot several 800s. Even better, I'm able to consistently bring in new bowlers to the sport. I had a first time bowler last year that wants to come back, and I'll likely need to add another bowler this year.

I love bowling competitively, but if you don't have at least one league that reminds you that bowling is for fun, you're doing it wrong.

This is why I bowl Match Club. It's as much a social event as it is competition. You meet a lot of new people, bowl in a bunch of different houses and it's generally just a relaxed good time.

I'm not sure how it got started, but it seems to be indigenous to No Calif, Southern Oregon and Northwest Nevada. The concept should work anywhere you have a reasonable concentration of bowling alleys within about a 150-200 mile radius.

The Chicago land area would be an ideal place for Match Club as would the New York, New Jersey, Philly and Boston area. But getting it going would take some work.

We have around 50 clubs in our area and each club will bowl maybe 10-15 others. We bowl each club on our schedule twice a year, once at our home house and then again at theirs. Then there are "fun days" which are fund raisers which are usually no tap with raffles, card games etc.

I've been on the fence on joining MC again. The two at Fireside (alpine, landpark) seem to have drama in the past. But, I was approached by a match maker from Napa who invited me to join their MC. Will see. I'll check out Fireside's MC clubs there and see if things changed.

You have options, the two Fireside clubs, Napa(used to be Fairfield), Vacaville and a new club called Foothill that bowls at Strikes Rocklin.

Depending on where you live of course, the old Landpark club(which is now Fireside match club I think, the other one is still called Alpine) has some fun people. I really like Chris and Beth. The old Fairfield club that bowls at Napa bowl is a fun group as well. Nothing wrong the Alpine or Vacaville, but if I was picking, it would be Fireside/Landpark, Foothills or Napa. I would say pick the one closest to you and go with it.

There is also a club at Strikes in Elk Grove that has some good people.

Foothills (35 mins away) seems really organized, website easy to navigate.

Though, I never stepped foot inside rocklin bowl. I'll check it out one weekend..

I did the PBA Regional at Strikes in Rocklin last year. I really like the house. I'd definitely bowl league there if I lived in the area.

If traffic wasn't so bad heading up there from downtown, I'd find a league for winter. But traffic is horrible.
