First Instrumented Bowling Ball?
« on: July 30, 2009, 11:14:40 AM »
While doing a Google search, I ran across this article about the first instrumented bowling ball (click here).

Never heard of it before.  Anyone here run across this article or some other one about this?

Wonder what the data would have been like if instead of a recreational bowler they had utilized a pro bowler?

I am pretty sure that by instrumented, they mean that measuring instruments have been placed in the ball for measurement purposes pertaining to the forces imparted to a bowling ball.

I think what Mi2Az is asking is this:
How much greater of a force would have been applied in the fingers and thumb for a pro bowler than a recreational bowler?

Dan, yes, that is what I was wondering about.  I would think that a professional bowler would be imparting more force with the fingers but will he?

Since this was out of the Far East, they referenced a Helicopter release.  It was interesting to note that there was no late finger force applied in that release.  The data seemed to imply that the fingers and thumb came out at the same time.

There is a MUCH better way to measure grip pressure and its all about the bowler not the ball
