So my house is finally getting new lanes.
« on: May 25, 2006, 03:02:03 AM »
Finally the old arse wooden lanes will be no more.  Which is good because they broke down from heavy oil to dry in 2 games.  Now we are getting synthetics.  I have bowled on synthetic before, but usually just out with a few friends not caring. I was wondering if there is any big changes I need to make.  Will the lanes retain their oil longer?  Also is there any difference in oil movement etc. Thanks for the help

A lot is going to depend on what brand they are buying. AMF HPL holds the conditions longer and has stronger backends (normally) than any of the others. The big problem may come if they go to synthetic approaches, which with Brunswick ProAnvilane is required, not sure on the others. I think the oil moves around more on synthetics causing more minor adjustments as the night goes along. The lane man is going to have to relearn how to condition the lanes, so be prepared for changing conditions for a little while or at least from what I have seen or heard. The wood lanes are going the way of the dinosaurs and in a lot of centers not too soon.

I think you'll find, in general, that the play will be much more angular than on wood. I've bowled in a lot of different wood houses, and most of them were more banana-arc than hockey-stick-angular, as a general rule.

It's going to require a lot of changes in speed, angle and breakpoint. Guys who have only bowled at that center and have never bowled anywhere else are going to either love it or hate it. There won't be much middle ground.

I find that there is more carry down of the oil. Your shot will be changing later in your set.

sad to see a wood house resort to synthetics. I'd like to see an uprise in wood lane houses. The old one's left never seem to just get new wood lanes or care to resurface the old ones. Thier answer is always plastic.

It will probaly take you a few weeks to establish your new comfort zone, and then you might see higher scores as you won't need to make nearly as many large adjustment chasing oil.  My experience on syns is that once you find a line, your pretty much set for 5-6 games with very minute adjustments.  Strokers tend to find their happy zone 1-2 boards away from their current happy zone, and as long as they wall up the outside, you'll get many of the same breaks.  I've often been able to play my exact lines with a simple ball change.  If you don't have an arsonal, you might have to make more of a drastic change.  I've bowled in 3 different houses with syns this year, and was able to play the exact same line in all three, but one house I used a trifecta, the next a Paradigm, and the thrid, a Desert heat.

My house is doing the same thing this summer, putting the laminate right over top the old lanes and then working with brunswick to put out a similar fluff shot.

I have a similar situation at my home house.  This place has been around since the 40's, and they have 12 old, wooden lanes.  They were resurfaced a couple years back, though.  I find that I have to adjust a LOT quicker on the wood than I do on synthetics, but soon we'll really find out.  They are right now building a new 24 lane center which will have a synthetic Brunswick surface.  They hope to have it open in November, so partway through the season the league will be shifting houses.  That should be interesting!!

Unfortunately the price of installing and upkeeping wood lanes is immensly greater over time than just installing synthetics. Many centers that opened around the 60's-70's are now needing to go to synthetics because the wood lanes that were originally installed are now being sanded down too far. You can only resurface lanes so many times before the nail heads start to come through.
