first night in league bowling 2 handed - results
« on: April 06, 2010, 03:11:14 PM »
first night using the 2 handed delivery where it counted I did okay with it
shot 755 for a 3 game set and it would have been higher but the second game I chopped 3-6-10 spare on my first ball in the tenth and was on 4 strikes going into the 10th

I was using a Roto Grip Mars drilled pin up over ring finger CG stacked at OOB surface
gave me a good look all night
I was pretty comfortable throwing all night, no soreness in my wrist or shoulder like Ive been experiencing lately bowling 1 handed
I was at or within 2 boards of my mark most of the night, I had a few shots that I pulled maybe 3 the whole night
had great pin carry only left 1 single 10 pin all night, and a few stone 9 pins
I was pretty happy with the results Im really thinking about fully switching over
I have a local tournament on Sun coming up that Im debating on whether or not I should bowl normally or 2 handed ?

WTF do you mean you did "okay"......I would be happy to shoot 600 two handed. Ive been at it for a year, trying to shoot consistantly a 200 game. Right now I am averaging 179 with a 201 as my high game. That is all on the PBA patterns though....never shot on a THS two handed...my speed is too slow.

yeah this was on a house shot
the tournament on Sunday is supposed to be on chameleon so I'll see how that goes
but I was at my mark most of the night which is my biggest surprise since Ive been trying it out
I thought I was really going to have trouble hitting my target and its been a lot easier than I expected
I normally average around 215-220 1 handed and have around low to mid 400 rpms and around 19-19.5mph 1 handed release so Im probably up around 550-575 rpms and speed is up around 21mph maybe a bit more sometimes
and I think because of the speed Im actually getting better hold area that I normally do playing very deep inside

the biggest thing for me trying this out was not to hook it more or rev it more because I was just fine with my normal release
the main reason was that my wrist and shoulder were starting to bother me if I bowled like 2 or 3 days in a row or a long set at a tournament etc.
and so far with the 2 handed release I have no pain or soreness anywhere
and the release is much easier to execute for me
so I think I might change over full time to this

So let me understand this, you had never thrown it two handed and you just try it out for the first time ever in league and shoot 755?

I guess I am pretty skeptic here... you say you think you are throwing it about 21mph??? I believe the biggest issue people have with 2 handed is generating ball speed... and you are saying you just decided to try it and can throw it 20+ mph and rev it around 550 rpms?? Just not adding up for me...

Exactly....the ONLY problem I have is the ball speed. Im getting faster each time. I have to really get my legs going and hit the push off with the serious speed to get the ball down the lane. In fact, Im gonna do a video on Thursday

HAMMERDOWN!!!

this was the 3rd time doing it for me
the other 2 times in practice I bowled probably 25-30 games lowest score so far about 205 I left a few splits in after I started to get the motion down

the biggest key I found with getting the speed up is you absolutely have to use the skip step or hop step exactly like Belmonte does and keeping your approach fluid and 1 motion not breaking it up at all
I watched a ton of video of Jason doing it before I even attempted it so I kind of went into it with a good idea of what I needed to do

without the hop step right before the slide there is no way you can generate the speed needed to get the ball down the lane,
I see a lot of people trying this release without the hop step and its the reason that they cant execute it well
also see a lot of the time people are kind of breaking up the motion because they just dont have the motion and rythm of the approach down and their timing is no where close to being right

for me all I did was move up on the approach and still utilize a 5 step approach
1 handed I use a 5 step approach but Im at the very end of the approach so I just moved up to the other set of dots

also another key for me was keeping my elbow on my throwing hand in tight to my body, If I let the elbow fly out then I start to run into trouble

I also had a good friend of mine helping me and critiquing my shots and approach the 2 times I went out to practice and again tonight in league

Im not guessing the speed and rev rate were measured after I really got comfortable doing this approach
I can range between 20 - 21.5mph and still be accurate anything harder than that and I start to spray it all over the place

I also use a 5 step approach. Ive actually moved two steps back on the approach, in order to lengthen my stride and get more speed. Other than gaining the speed that I need, everything is fluid in motion....timing and release as well. How about a video for us? Im going to do one on Thursday

Yeah I have to do one my camera
we used a friends camera last time and loaded the video onto the ebonite video program to measure everything
not sure how to upload video from that onto here
especially since its not on my own personal computer
next time I go out for a practice session I will try and get some video up

BBU are you using the hop step in your approach ?
whats the speed your generating right now ?

Just upload the video to any hosting site...like photobucket.com and post the link here.

I have no idea what my speed is. I realy have no way of finding out. I know its probably just a tick under what Im throwing one handed....Im around 16-17 one handed so Id guess 13-16

No I am not doing the hop. Its just a normal 5 step delivery. The only success Ive had is on the long oil patterns. Anything less or a house shot, and Im using the whole lane. I was playing 20 to 10 on the Shark pattern last week, which isnt the ideal line, but since my two handed ball speed is so slow...it worked out well.

You absolutely have to use the hop step in order to get the speed up and get a more stable ball motion
this was the biggest thing that I think I can state makes this approach effective
you generate a lot of power with that hop step
when I first tried it I was doing just a normal set of 5 steps and my speed was much slower than my 1 handed delivery
then when I started to get a little comfortable holding the ball etc.
I added the hop step and the difference in speed and ball motion was incredibly noticeable
If you watch Belmonte do it he executes the hop step perfectly which is the first thing I started to focus on when doing this approach,

give it a try its awkward at first but once you get the rhythm down of the hop step it will start to really come together for you

also try moving up on the approach when you try the hop step
and try it in a 5 step approach,
to use the whole approach you would really have to take very long strides which throws the momentum of the approach off
you want the feet and arm swing to be fast to be effective

I was able to use it tonight in a normal volume THS shot the whole entire night playing just a little deeper than I normally do because Im able to keep the speed up

I have been watching Belmo online for years, even before he came over here to the US. Ive been preacticing it off and on for a few years, but it wasnt until a year ago that I started really putting time in to it.

I guess you could more or less say my approach is slow and smooth like the two handed lefty thats on tour....Cassidy Schaub. He doesnt use the hop step.

Im also not using the whole approach. Im in between both sets of dots.

Yeah I think the reason your speed is down and you are getting the over reaction on anything but high volume long patterns is because of the slow smooth approach,
not saying to just get up there and let it rip but you have to generate speed and smoothness in the approach motion in order for this release to be effective
other wise it becomes extremely rev dominant and over reaction happens or rolling out starts to happen and that leads to over/under type of reactions sometimes
next time you go out try the skip step out and see what it does for you
it might be good for you
I simply like the fact that this approach seems a lot easier on my shoulder and wrist
I think Im gonna finish out the year with this and see how I do with it
