first night in league bowling 2 handed - results
« on: April 06, 2010, 03:11:14 PM »
first night using the 2 handed delivery where it counted I did okay with it
shot 755 for a 3 game set and it would have been higher but the second game I chopped 3-6-10 spare on my first ball in the tenth and was on 4 strikes going into the 10th

I was using a Roto Grip Mars drilled pin up over ring finger CG stacked at OOB surface
gave me a good look all night
I was pretty comfortable throwing all night, no soreness in my wrist or shoulder like Ive been experiencing lately bowling 1 handed
I was at or within 2 boards of my mark most of the night, I had a few shots that I pulled maybe 3 the whole night
had great pin carry only left 1 single 10 pin all night, and a few stone 9 pins
I was pretty happy with the results Im really thinking about fully switching over
I have a local tournament on Sun coming up that Im debating on whether or not I should bowl normally or 2 handed ?

just like Jason does right before the slide step
Im right handed so my steps are as follows

1 - right foot just as the foot comes down I start the push away
2 - left foot
3 - right foot and start the skip step
4 - left foot finish the skip step and into the slide
5 - slide and release

hope it makes sense for you this way
but just watch Jason on youtube and thats the same rhythm and steps that I use
also I try to mirror my follow through just like his

I've also had major problems with speed bowling two handed as well, and I don't think my rev rate exceeded 400RPM.  I did the hop skip so I was sort of thinking my problem was the timing of my off-hand going off the ball.  Not sure if it's early or late but it seemed that the ball went into the lane too much, so maybe early?  Or maybe body angle problem.  I also don't really understand the stop/start where your momentum changes in a bad way.  Jason seems to imply that's what people would do in the second step of five but I just don't get the concept of how the momentum changes in a counter-productive way.  Is that something one-handers do?

Wouldn't changing your delivery like that during the season be considered illegal(same as switching between right and left handed) ? Still good bowling.

no we checked the rule book last night because the guy I was bowling against was complaining,
the only thing you cant do is switch between right and left
you can go back and forth between 1 handed and 2 handed as long as you use the same hand in the ball,

its not like your putting your off hand into the ball its just guiding it along,
your still putting your right hand fingers into the ball just not the thumb
I still shoot my spares 1 handed with a straight and flat release

no technically you're still bowling right handed

I think he means by stop/start if you actually take a pause with your body you are killing your momentum which will have an effect on your ball speed down lane
same ideas between the 1 handed and 2 handed approach continuous momentum through the approach and relaxed swing and release once you start to muscle things you run into trouble
When I first started I broke the approach down into sections to get comfortable
as soon as I was able to sync everything together in a continuous motion thats when the ball speed came really up and the rev rate stayed high and the ball motion was predictable
I really think the skip/step and the fluid fast footwork are keys to this release

I normally average around 215-220 1 handed and have around low to mid 400 rpms and around 19-19.5mph 1 handed release so Im probably up around 550-575 rpms and speed is up around 21mph maybe a bit more sometimes
and I think because of the speed Im actually getting better hold area that I normally do playing very deep inside

average 220 with low mid revs at 400 with 19mph ball speed?????   im picturing that and that sounds good, and you wanted to increase speed and revs?

A half ten is not a great shot.  No, you shouldn't have carried it.

no my reason for switching was not to increase speed and revs it was because
Ive been having a bit of shoulder and wrist soreness lately when I have long days of bowling or bowling several days in a row which was my reason for considering this type of 2 handed delivery

its much easier on my shoulder since my arm swing is about half of the height and I dont have to work as much wrist action in the release as I normally do either

my 1 handed approach is just fine except for the slight pain and soreness Ive been having lately
a lot of guys last night were asking why I was switching they thought my 1 handed delivery looked great also
the 2 handed delivery of course lets me open up the lane a lot faster than normal also which is another benefit I think

the higher speed and revs just naturally come with the approach and are much more effortless than a 1 handed release

Maybe I just wasn't really doing the skip step then, but I really think I was.  I still wonder if my off-hand timing was bad, causing the ball to going into the lane the wrong way and killing its momentum(one way or another).

Hey Ralphie
I tried the hippity hop in practice on Thursday...and it did generate a 2 mph faster speed than what I was doing. With a bit more practice and less of an awkward feeling, Im sure I can have it down and the speed increased.

Hey awesome
I know that skip step really helps get the speed
you generate a lot of momentum doing that
and the high speed is necessary to keep the ball playable on the lane
I have my second night at league with it tomorrow
did a tournament yesterday on Chameleon but didnt do good at all
really hoping to have it down good by the time the summer is over

Im picking up another night of bowling next year, so my goal is to be comfortable enough with it to strictly use this extra league for two handed bowling only

I gave 2-handed bowling a very brief try again on wednesday.  Just two shots in practice and one more the last shot of the night.  The ones in practice were mostly bad, either in mechanics or where the ball ended up.  The last shot wasn't good either, but I moved 5 boards left of where I was one-handed I believe.  I managed to wash out, to me that's a good sign that I could probably at least keep the ball on the right side.  Maybe if I gave it a full chance and worked with it enough I might get decent at it.  The hardest parts for me seem to be consistency overall and probably putting the ball in the right spot.  After that speed and ball control in order to be a little more versatile seems difficult as well.

yeah it is a little harder as far accuracy but if you just practice with it I think it is much more effective game
and for me its easier on my arm and shoulder and wrist which is a huge benefit
