First PBA Regional?
« on: September 13, 2013, 04:40:42 AM »
for those of you who have attempted a PBA Regional, what did you wait for in your game before going?  Which pattern did you look for?  How did you do?

I ask because I noticed there is a Regional about an hour and a half from me coming up in October.  Chameleon is the pattern, and looks like people are less likely to go super huge on that pattern, with spares being the name of the game.  I am considering going as a learning experience.  Albeit, I averaged 202 and 203 the last two years, last year I made some changes to my game, where and how I play the game, and how my equipment is drilled, and feel this year could be 215+, and that's in an inconsistent wood house.

I'm not looking to be berated for thinking about doing this.  I am however looking for constructive advice and hear of experiences from others who may have already been in this position.

I bowled in a regional. Came in 86th out of 105. Practice was one thing (cheetah pattern) I was killing it. The next day it was not the same shot as it was supposed to be. I would say do it, have fun and talk to the guys at practice.

I have bowled part time if you call it that for years. If you want to see where you are and want to give it a try, I say do it. The guys you see on TV are incredible and there are some bowling regional s that are just as good or at least close. I think I bowled many times as a fan too much, but always learned something about myself or my game. Too often that to be good I needed to bowl more. The very first comment by irsallabout me was dead on in so many levels. I can guarantee practice won't play the same, but I still think its important to get comfortable. Kim Kearney says she shoots every spare during practice, never see anyone do this but great idea. I would repeat, make sure your equipment is legal, even some approved manufacturers have stuff that you can't use.

Best way I know to see where you are and what you need to work on, just as expensive lesson.

Thank you for all the input.  At this point, I am waiting til the next good one comes around. I know my main Achilles Heal is the 10 pin, and have actually begun devoting a couple games a week to just the 10 pin.  I have begun to also keep a notebook at league to write down what my frames were, and be able to indicate if it was something I did, or a minor tweak missed, or just one of those shots.  My last set had 21 strikes, 8 spares, and 4 opens (2 10's, and 2 splits) for a 643 (173-247-223).  had nothing else changed except the 2 missed 10's getting coverd, i'd have been 661.  not bad for first night of the year coming off a 203 season.  I figure if I missed 2-3 10's a week, that's about 9 pins of average easy I was giving away.  Not going to happen this year if I can help it.

I am feeling more comfortable with my shot this year, have my first 4.5" pin ball with the Totally Defiant, and so far I'm really liking the pin length and the ball.  I'm looking to make this a great year.  I would really like to show my former team captain what he walked away from to form a "super team" is something to contend with.
