First performance ball Avalanche vs Streetrod
« on: June 29, 2008, 08:48:11 PM »
I hope you will help me with a question.

My girlfriend, who got into bowling also, is ready for her first performance ball. Up to now she just used polyester.

our choice got down to two balls, the Avalanche Solid and the Streetrod solid.

I think your first ball has to be a control piece with a predicable reaction. An all backend ball isn't the right choice to start an arsenal. Also the fact that the 13 pound balls have the same core as the 14-16 pounders influenced the choice.

My girlfriend has medium to lower revs and a speed of 23-24 km/u(say 14.5 mph). In my opinion she's a little speed dominant. She has a lower axis rotation, guess around 30 degrees.

Is the Avalanche solid a good choice for a first ball in your opinion? Some describe it's reaction as very tame, so is a step up necessary or has it enough power? The Streetrod has a higher DIF and the RG is about the same.

I'm curious what your opinion will be on this. Which one would you choose?

Thanks,

Antoine

Streetrod all the way. I have thrown that ball and its a very good ball for the money.. I have also seen the avalanche in action and was not impressed at all..

Sure I'll jump in......

I threw the T2, and loved it when it was out.  From what I have read the Avalanche is the same ball except it uses a pearl powercoil 18 coverstock.
Maybe if you took the shine off of the ball to use it it would be better.

Both cores are very similar, you can't go wrong with the lightbulb for a starter ball.

I think the avalanche would be a bit milder than the street rod, so I would get that one for her.....

and the street rod for you to compare lol

I'd also rather got with a Street Rod, because of the higher differential. The Avalanches have only a low differential. They make very good balls for high rev players - you could probably take a solid and drill it strong, but my personal choice would be a Street Rod.
Or, alternatively check out Brunswick's new Swarm as well as the normal Power Grooves (there's even one in light blue and pink, but it it is IMHO butt-ugly...) which are also good options. A Tropical Storm is also an option.

Sorry, it's the time difference.

You are right about the lightbulb core.

I love my Avalanche Solid.  It's the perfect control ball for me.

It clears the heads, gives a good midlane read and makes a smooth move to the pocket.  It doesn't over react to the dry boards.

For me the Street Rods were both stronger then the Avalanche Solid.  They both reacted too quickly when they hit dry and were harder for me to control.
