Where do you line up, the first set of dots (closest to the foul line) or the second set (furthest away). What are the advantages/disadvantages to each. I noticed alot of PBA guys start from the second set and have a 5 step approach. Anyway I was just curious to hear some opinions...

I use first set of dots< I also do not slide and I use a four step approach and my steps aren't that great either.

I used to stand all the way at the end of the approach. I am 6'6, with a 4 step approach.
That was about 8 years ago, and now i stand at the closer ones, still using 4 steps...
My consistency went WAY up, becuase my body was actually under control.

I set up at the first dots, when I stand at the back dots I tend to throw it too hard.
-
First set with a 5 step approach and I still stop about 6 inches behind the foul line. ( I'm a monsterous 5'6 )

I dont use the dots initially. I used them but I dont. I used them to help me line up but im almost a full step infront of the dots closer to the foul line. I dont have big steps and also have a 5 step approach.

I have a 5 step approach and stand on the edge of the approach. My natural tendency is a 6 step, but obviously I can't do that without finding some elaborate way to step up onto the approach consistently.

I use the space inbetween the two sets of dots.

I stand about 4"-5" in front of the second set of dots and I have a 4 step approach. My bowling coach helped me notice that when I was standing directly on the second set of dots and using a 4 step approach, I was finishing a good 5" behind the follow line and sometimes causing the ball to land on the approach rather than over the foul line.
I've noticed more consistency in all houses since learning to move up.

I line up with my heels at the 2nd set of dots for a 5-step approach.

I have a 5 step approach and place my heels on the set closest to the foul line.
-
I stand in front of the front dots with my White Dot
I'm petite (4'10") and take 4 steps, so I'd need a running start if I started at the back dots!

I'm 5'11" and start with my heels on the farthest set and use a four step approach, because I slide a ton. I need to stand there to create enough ball speed to match up correctly.

I'm about 5 8" and it depends on where i start. Normally i start on the first set of dots using a 5 step approach. But if i need my ball to hook earlier than i start using a 4 step approach. But if the lanes are drier than i stand on the 2nd set of dots and use a 5 step approach.
-
i stand with my toes over the second set of dots i usually start lineing up between the 12 and the 17 bord depending on pattern im lefty
-
It varies. Normally I'm about 5 inches behind the front dots (closer set). I'm pretty large (6' 3", 290) so this may seem a bit close. However, if I need to vary speed I'll move up or back, shorten (or lengthen) my steps and work from there. I'f I started at the back of the approach I'd always throw the ball thru my break point (way too much speed would be generated).

I actually stand 18" behind the dots on my own imaginary row and take 7 steps...only way I can get enough pin action off the wall to make big splits

Both......Typically start at the back but if I begin to leave a lot of corner pins I'll take a few steps up try to change the results. Five or four step, again depending on what I am leaving. Will only use the four step at the second set of dots. 5'8" righty.
