First squad or Second?
« on: March 16, 2010, 06:09:53 AM »
When you have a choice of bowling in the early squad or the second, and then on from their if you qualify. These are small tournaments with low turnout usually.
Which do you prefer and why?
My thoughts were the second squad to be able to continue on the already "transitioned" shot. Instead of a 1 1/2 rest between games and coming back to much different look. Am I correct?

depends on the shot. one toruney i would bowl on after the first shift the lanes would be so fried that i would have to loft the cap right out of the gate on the second shift. another toury they never stripped the lanes, just kept adding 15 feet of oil to the heads and that was it, it got to the point where there was more oil at the end of the lane then in the front. people were taking the sanding disks that you use to bevel holes to the track of bowling balls just to get it to move a few boards. these are some extreme examples but it all depends on the shot they put out and what kind of surface you are bowling on.

It's all about the re-oil procedures. If everyone is getting fresh stuff, it barely matters and comes down basically to what time of the day you bowl best. In a re-oil situation, I would prefer second shift (I know what I have to shoot, it's not first thing in the morning, etc.). If there's no re-oil, get first shift, unless the pattern is so heavy and/or flat that you'd benefit from having someone in front of you to break it down.

If it's like what the above poster mentioned and they're just adding oil to the heads, what you do in that situation is go find the tournament director and drop your ball on his foot. Such a scenario means the tournament does not offer equal shots for all bowlers and that's not fair.

one  tournament  I  bowl  in  we  used  to  get  put  in  for  the  morning  shift  (man  fileing  entries is  morning person).   with  being  the  first  weekend  of  the  tournament  not  mant  people are  there  and  we  end  up  shooting  against  ourselves  for  shot  pot/brackets.

last  yr  we  got  him  to  get  us  on  the  2nd  shift.  by  the  time  we  had  our  prctice  the  house  was  so  humid  I  stuck  so  bad  that  I  kissed  the  lane  ,  almost  broke  my  bowling  hand  try'n  to  catch  the  fall.   hope  this yr  is  different (  is  in  different house/state).

as  fare  as  oil  like  an  earlier post  they  just  added  to  what  was  there .  not  offten  can  I  throw  my  VG  for  3  games  in  a  row  let  alone  the  6.  1  of  2  words  come  to  mind    soup/flood .
