went in my basement to grab a old ball for league the other night & found my Lane 1 Gold Nugget cracked

favorite Lane 1 ball ever & shot my 1st 300 w/it.........

Wonder why that happens sometimes ? You keep a ball in the same environment for a long period of time and then with no change it cracks.

I wish I knew the answer, as I've had 5 balls split on me over the last year. Some older, some newer; some I hadn't touched in months, some I had just thrown the last week. I've had some stuff(6-10 years old) that's been in the same place for years, and are still fine.

On the plus side, it gives me an excuse to try some of the newer stuff on the market

It cracks due to the pressure of 15 or 16 pounds being put on one point of the bowling ball for so long. Remember that only a very small part of a round bowling is touching the surface of whatever it is sitting on. All that weight on that one pressure point for a long period of time, is going to cause the soft, porous cover of today's balls to crack in order to relieve that pressure.

If you're going to store a ball for a long period of time, you need to rotate it every once in a while to move the pressure to a new part of the ball.

Rotating periodically doesn't seem to make any noticeable difference(for me), as I started doing that many years ago, and still do it, as it shouldn't do any harm. I still have balls crack. I have a couple dozen in the current lineup, and some of them are 10+ years old, with no sign of cracking, and I've had some crack after a year or so(just beyond the warranty, of course).

I assume cracking has more to do with multiple different materials and densities of those materials used in making a ball.

Assuming where a ball is stored is not kept at one constant temp. the different layers will react to temperature change differently. and if one layer expands/contracts more, or faster, cracks can be introduced.

back when I was bowling 3 nights a week, I had a ball crack from the time I put the bag into the car and took the ball out for league. and conversely I have had balls sitting in the closet, no movement or rotation for years w/o cracking.

just never know for sure

this is only the 2nd ball i lost to cracking in over 25 years of having my equip. in my basement. the temp is pretty consistent down there. i did lose a hammer big blue pearl that i had @ my office on a shelf so it wasn't in contact w/ any outside wall or floor & temp is controlled. so really have no clue why they just give out. maybe hairline cracks form & we don't see them & they expand.
