several times in the past, I have played around and thrown one of my buddies balls... Not a big deal as we have similar hand sizes, except he's a lefty full roller (generic drill has cg near palm and pin right of thumb hole). For me (being a righty 3/4 roller), this puts the bow tie just underneath middle finger. This results in the ball flaring over both fingers. Interstingly enough, this "layout" for me produces a very unique reaction that seems to carry the house. No early reaction, and a hook/set on the backend. However, unlike most "normal" layouts that are designed for hook/set, this lefty full roller layout doesn't seem to die on the backend... it retained enough energy to carry the corners (for me anyways).
So, last week I drilled up a new ball for a customer. After throwing it a few games, he decided that he liked it so much (black widow bite) that he didn't want his old ball any longer. So he gave me an old beat up Apex Addiction. I plugged it up, and sanded most of the big chunks out of the surface and redrilled it for myself, but used a lefty full roller layout. Same type of deal.. bowtie under middle finger, flare over fingers.. but roll and hits well.
last night during pba league bowling on the cheetah pattern. First game, I switched between my Code and Elite Cheetah.. had decent reactions with both, but neither seemed to be the right ball. Shot 190. Moved pairs and there seemed to be a little more oil, so I switched and pulled out the Addiction. Went +70 for the last two games.. LOL. Almost seemed like I had a little area.
Anyone else have an experience like this with a layout that "shouldn't" work or roll well? I haven nothing invested in the ball (besides a plug and redrill), so if the fingers crack out in a month, I could care less... just wanted to give it a shot and see... Seems promising.
