Flashing Ball Legal in ABC Competition?
« on: March 21, 2005, 06:34:14 AM »
Hello, I bowl in a league and this guy is using a ball with a flashing light inside of it.  I thought these balls were illegal for use in ABC Competition.  Please let me know.  Thank you!  Joe

Should I contact the ABC or just let my league secretary know that it is not legal?  Thank you!  Joe

I would start locally and go from there as high as you need to go.

You might mention it to him.  He may be blissfully unaware.

I wouldn't make a bigger deal out of it than need be.  Sometimes people just don't know the rules, so if you tell them they are breaking the rules, then they are more than happy to comply.  But if you jump straight to the national level you're bound to cause some avoidable hard feelings.  Tell the league secretary  or league president and go from there.

I bowled against a guy using one in an adult/junior league.  He used it as his spare ball and had no idea that it wasn't legal.  It was a sanctioned league, and I knew the ball was illegal, but I didn't see the need to make waves because it was just a fun league.  I'm more disturbed that the pro shop guy even sold it to him, knowing that it was going to be used in a sanctioned league.

Yep it's on the banned list.  We have 2 in the shop and at one time had 4 illegal balls. 2 quasars and 2 Michael Jordans.  People wanted them for some reason or another but the first thing we tell people is that they are illegal in sanctioned play.  Most are using them for glow bowling.

There is a list on bowl.com of the illegal for sanction play balls.  I want to say there was about 6 or so.   I was wrong!  Here is the link to the list.

http://www.bowl.com/specs/ballNonconforming.aspx

There are pictures of each one.  The site states "This is a list (with photos) of non-conforming bowling balls that cannot be used in USBC sanctioned competition."

The Quasar and the Micheal Jordan reasons are obivious.  I'm not sure about the others.

Yet another youngin' chiming in without knowing.

I wont go hard on you because I know you were just trying to participate, but, every bowling ball that is used in sanctioned competition MUST be approved by the ABC. This means honor score or not, none the the games bowled with the ball in question are legal & all scores are to be thrown out.

Beyond the rules, if a guy was using a quasar as a spare ball in my sanctioned fun league, I probably wouldn't bust him out. I would just mention to him quietly that the ball was illegal & if by chance he does shoot an honor score they wouldn't count.

The black lines in the basketball were grooved too deep, making it an illegal surface imperfection. The theory being if that ball was legal, people would begin digging large channels out of the balls to get different reactions.

The Brunswick Web is illegal due to non conforming manufacturing method.  The separate colors are "fused" together in some way, shape, or form.  I guess the ABC is/was worried about it coming apart or something.

The quasar was banned because of metal(wires) in the lights.  The clearballs were banned only because of content. Censored in other words.  I wouldn't want one, but I think people should be able to use one if they want to.  I have no idea about the others, but would like to know.

The whiskey clear ball has liquid in the bottles in the center.  Shifting weight would be and interested performance factor (no, not in this clear ball, but maybe in an 'absolut' inferno?)
