I'm not this good...
« on: March 03, 2004, 05:27:25 PM »
I bowl in one league per week on Wednesday nights.  Once in a while I bowl in a weekend tournament or practice once a week.  In my Wednesday night league the last 4 weeks I've shot 773, 632, 760, and 756.  That's 243 per game for the last 4 weeks.  I've basically gotten in a groove with our house shot that I know I'm going to hit the pocket no matter what, it's just a matter of if I'm going to carry or not.  I'm throwing an Inferno straight up the 10 board.  If I hit 8 or 9 board it comes back enough, if I hit 11 or 12 board it sits in the oil and hits fine (maybe a flat 10).  Last night for example, I had all strikes or 9 counts except for 1 frame.  Now, I have no doubts that I'm a good bowler who happens to be in a groove right now, but I can't help but think that easy conditions matched up with a ball that works really well on those conditions are why it's so easy for me.  It's ridiculously easy for me right now. Basically it's a stike, a 10 pin, or a 4 pin.  The only thing that makes me think it's me and not technology and conditions is that I'm kicking everyone's butt in our league.  I'm a decent bowler, but I'm not sure I'm this good...

Give yourself a little credit.  While you have a few boards of area, you're undoubtedly repeating shots, rolling the ball the same way and maintaining the same ball speed from shot to shot.  Most house bowlers can't do that.

Here's a suggestion: videotape yourself while you're in this groove.  Your approach timing is probably as good as it will ever get right now, so you should record it to use as a benchmark when (not if) you suddenly find that you can hardly put one foot in front of the other.

Good bowling!

No offense taken...that's exactly my point.  I wonder if the conditions are just too easy for the ball and line I'm throwing.

This guy varies a handful of shots per night by a board or two and the first thing you can tell him is he's bowling on a wall?  Give the guy a little credit.  I've had nights when I've bisected the third arrow 30+ times and walked away with 650, tops.  Like someone stated previously, enjoy the ride.

Even on a wall, your scores are exceptional. 220 on a wall and 240 on a wall are totally different things. You are throwing the ball well. Keep it up.

the only bad thing about a wall shot is that it makes it even harder to bowl on a sport shot or tougher pattern when thats what youre used to.  ive bolwed on both, and the biggest difference by far is the amount of confidence i have bowling on each.  when you know you can miss 5 boards right and still recover to the pocket, theres a pretty good chance you will be confident throwing the ball.  on a sport shot, missing 2 boards right may mean the balls in the gutter.  you may know you can hit the mark all the time, but the fear in missing may take over and you wont be as accurate.  dont take any credit away when youre bowling on a walled up shot.  if youre beating everyone else bowling on the same conditions, you must be doing something right.  but i will say that bowling on a sport shot is a much more demanding experience.

if you look at my profile, you will understand what i am about to type.

i purposely bowl in 2 leagues: wednesday is a 30' THS. tuesday is a 42' gutter-to-gutter sport shot. jekyll and hyde. white and black. 171 average and 151 average. i like the diversity, because it makes me be a better bowler. i don't walk lightly, because if i slip up on the sport shot i am doomed to failure. if i go 2  boards left i go gutter... 2 boards right and i am thru the nose. the THS allows me more room for error and i like bowling a 200 every night. i havent been bowling long, but i do know that different shorts keep you bowling well. i hope to better my average over the next couple years, and making it as difficult as i can is the best thing. finding what works is the best thing. it sounds to me like you are just lined up as square as square can be! keep it up, but don't get into a rut from a weak house shot. you might find yourself sinking at a tourney, because all the sudden your confort zone is gone, and you aren't as sharp at adjusting...

i don't care who makes it, how much it costs, or how sexy the ball looks. can i carry the 7 and level the deck with a $60 ball?
