FLOOD ball suggestions?
« on: May 13, 2003, 07:51:32 AM »
I am looking for suggestions for a ball that will work well in a flood to complete my arsenal.
I currently have the following:

Med to Med/Heavy
Storm Shock Trauma
15#, 3-3.5, 3.75top
Pin over ring (1:30)
CG kicked lil right
mass bias in strong position

Med to Med/Dry
Storm Eraser Boost
15#, 2.5-3, 2.75top
Pin over ring (12:00)
CG grip center
mass bias on track

Dry and Spare
Columbia Bud II U-Dot

Super Carbide Bomb, without a doubt.  Nothing will react better on a ton of oil, period.

If you wanted to stay with Storm I would go with the Deuce, I love mine cane play league shot or a flooded shot. still hits hard in flooded lanes.

I didn't think the Deuce would be that much stronger than my Shock Trauma since they have basically the same RG and Diff. How much more agreesive is the Deuce than the Shock Trauma if you know someone that has both.

Since you seem to prefer Storm, you might consider the Trauma Response if you can still find one.  It makes a pretty good heavy oil ball, but it does need oil to work well.  Since they are already out of production, you can probably find one at a pretty decent price.

On Lucky Lefty's recomendation, I bought an Angle Evolution Tour for long oil. I went from struggling to break 600 to multiple 700+ on the same shot. I liked the ball so much I bought 3 more to keep NIB. They can be had cheaply too. Check out a post in the AMF forum from 2 weeks ago. It's a great ball.

For heavy floods:

Super Carbide Bomb, Pro Zone Azure, Chaos, Angle of Evolution Tour. I wouldn't recommend unless you see goo-gobs of oil because these balls will probably look weak on med-heavy conditions as they would burn up most of their energy.

stormin1,

Considering your profile, only Response will fit with your style for flood if you wanna stay with Storm.(If you can find one of course..) Check my review.

I haven't tried a Super Carbide Bomb, so I can't help on that. But it is said to be the best flood/oil ball ever produced by any company.

Morich Colossus Supreme. Well, best oil ball I've rolled my self. Highly recommend but only for flood..

I disagree about Eliminator and Deuce.
Eliminator and Deuce are not heavy oil balls unless you can fire it up with fairly high revs.. I do not recommend them for heavy oil for anyone with your style.

I alos disagree about the Duece and the Eliminator being a good heavy oil ball for the normal bowler.  but if you have revs like Pchee2, about 600 and speed like SrKegler, about 13, you could use the Duece or the Eliminator.  So I won't say they can't be use on heavy oil.  But for the mer mortals, the bowling balls I prefer is:

Evolution Tour
Lane 1 Super Carbide Bomb
for Storm the Response
I'd like to say the Super Freak, it has the coverstock but I only have three games on the ball.
The Freak and the Mutant can handle a lot of oil if you keep the coverstock dull.

But I'd like to add again, if someone with a ton of revs threw some of these high loaded particle balls, they might still get the ball to roll/burn out IMHO.

Mongo,

I think the Icon 300 juts sucks but the Wow handles oil better though its hard to expalin.  the particles are tighter in hte 300 as compared to the Wow.  The Wow seems to be much more porus.  The Elinanator on heavy oil???  Like I said, some bowlers can throw anything.  Great ball though. I'm getting ready to drill the Addiction but the V2 particle is a good heavy oil ball when dull, but keeping it dull is hard, it sucks up oil so fast that you have to prep the surface after each set when used on heavier oil. But when fresh, the ball is tremendous.

for a heavy oil ball look no farther than brunswicks swamp monster. this ball has a VERY aggressive particle coverstock. drill it up for maximum hook and you'll think your name is robert smith the way the ball will hook.

Greg: Being a Brunswick guy, there is nothing wrong with you recommending the Swamp Monster. But remember the concept of truth in advertising. There is no ball (from any manufacturer) that will hook in oil to the point where "you'll think your name is robert smith".

Again, it's great to get excited about certain balls, but don't confuse myth with reality. There are actually bowlers here who might take your words on this subject seriously.

steven, as usual i find it amusing that i'm the only person you ever seem to make comments about.....nevertheless, the first time I, MYSELF, threw a brunswick swamp monster i literally was hooking the ball like mr. smith. i could seemingly miss any amount right and the ball came back with no quit. i have never really been comfortable with a deep inside line but this ball made ME( and probably others )feel like they could now play this shot if they had to.

you are right in one respect, though. no ball can really hook on a flood. you are looking for mid-lane roll. this lane condition would favor my game. since i rarely throw the ball 20mph anymore slightly slower speed and an aggressive particle ball would work well on a lot of oil. it would help to use a release that favored roll as opposed to spin.

Mongo,

Thank you for the info on the Addiction.  Though I still don't agre about the Icon 300, I do ealize that it doesn't take much to get more out of a ball then I can.  When you are talking about the LRG are you talking Lane 1 or Storm?

No, Roto Grip's heavy ball is the Fuel, not the Top Fuel. Depending on what you think is a flood, either drill it strong, or drill it to roll.  I have this ball for heavy headed fresh shots, long and sloppy shots,...it's beautiful.
