flying with 3 ball tote
« on: January 27, 2010, 11:37:19 AM »
i was on the hammer forum and one of the guys said to find out about flying w/ 3 ball roller tote.  I bought the vise ones.  He said that some airlines do not let you fly with anything bigger than 2 ball totes.  Has anyone flown southwest and flown with 3 ball totes, or had any problems with it?

I've flown a couple times and I was able to take a 2 ball tote on board with me but the 3 ball tote was a different story.

With just the balls in the tote my bag weighed in at about 46 pounds (vise bag) yet at the airport the bag weighed 52 so we were stuck with a fee to check them. But on the way back home the bag weighed in at 46 pounds so it was under the limit. I'm sure it all depends on the airports your flying through but I had no issues flying with a 3 ball tote. All comes down to how accurate their scales are.

You have to check this with the respective airline, it is AFAIK individual, since the cabin equipment is not standardized (even though there is an international maximum limit in size for what you might take into the cabin at all - I remember a hand luggage jig at the loacl airport).

Some airlines also have special cabin space alotted to bigger hand luggage that does not fit into the compartments above the seats due to size or weight (e. g. for kennel boxes with animals), others will force you to check in the ball bag just like normal luggage.

I went up to Connecticut recently and did some bowling ---on the way  back home I wanted to bring a single ball on with me---airline security determined that it could be used as a weapon and decided not to let me bring it on board

When I fly with equipment I check 3 balls in a KR roller tote (remove the shoulder strap!) and carry on 2 balls in a shoulder tote. I put my shoes and accessory pouch in with my clothing. Going through security with the carry on gets me pulled aside for an explosive test. They wipe each ball with a swap and stick it in a reader. Whole process takes less than 3 minutes.

If you have an address to ship it to, Fed Ex or UPS is, in my opinion, well worth the money to not have to drag that stuff through the airport.  Plus, it's not like the airline will treat your stuff any better when handling it...

I just flew Southwest to Orlando with two 3 ball totes and flying out I had no problems but coming back both the zippers were broken. It seems that someone tried to lift the bags by the zipper strap instead of the handle. I would recommend tucking the zipper strap inside the bag so not to confuse the baggage handlers.

Jake, this is what I'm going to do.

I am only taking one of the shoe pouches that came with my 3 ball roller and putting that in with my suitcase.  I am taking 6 real balls in my 2 rollers and Jeff and I are taking one his 2 ball tote pluses on the plane as his carryon for our spare balls.  The Vise bags wiegh like 4 pounds empty so u should be right at the limit..thats what I'm planning on.  You should just plan on taking your bare essentials out there with you..Tape, Towel, Rosin bag, all you extra soles and stuff for your shoes.  If you need anything...it will all be out there at the STadium.

You should be all set.  The 3 ball rollers are specifically made for traveling by plane.

I don't know about the totes.

But the baggage handlers hated the full size 3 ball roller bags. Almost everyone that used them on planes had them broken. I saw them loading the planes and looked like they where throwing them down on the baggage conveyors trying to break the backs of them.

Virtually everyone I know quit using them for that reason. I don't know anyone who has used one the last 5 years.

I bought a new airline roller for Nats a few years ago. First use was the trip to the tourney. I detached the 2 snapon bags & packed them in my carryon for weight reasons. 3 - 15's + bag = 48# When we got to the bag pickup, the baggage handlers had crushed 3 of the 4 grommets that held the bags on. So now I have 2 pouches for misc. that do not snap on anymore.
