years ago, i found an old NIB hard rubber ball on ebay for about $20 with shipping. It works great, goes straight. the 1970's/1980's style core gives it just enough that if i push the ball out, it might straight out and run the gutter for the 10 pin, but has no actual grab.
My guess is that any surface with no grab and a minor, or no core, will be your best option.
This year, i have actually started using it for all single pin spares, and it definately has no hook crossing the oil.
