whats the most outrageous shot you've ever bowled on?
« on: February 15, 2004, 09:07:08 AM »
on sunday mornings, some friends and i partake a 2 hours stretch on 2 lanes at a local house. they are known for having AWESOME heads, and a beautiful 35 foot THS with stripped backends. its likes waking up and seeing a fresh snowfall: you know you're the first to touch it.

we get there this morning and the owner comes to tak to us about the newly resurfaced lanes. well, sh!t... my first ball goes into the gutter! i lay over and look down the lane. the damn oil is LOOOOOOOOONG! and out to the 5 board, not the 10 (hence the gutter ball). the owner comes up and says, "oh yea, its oiled 50 feet out to the 5 board. the backends are clean tho..."

great. i show up to a swamp with beach balls!!!needless to say, as soon as i finally find a line to the pocket, i am greeted with huge splits 2-3 frames later. i left more 1-3-4-6-7s and 3-6-7s than i can remember. it was horrible.
--------------------
i don't care who makes it, how much it costs, or how sexy the ball looks. does it carry the 7 and level the deck? did i just beat you? aren't i clearing the heads with my $60 ball?

bring on the Lefty uprising!

Bowled on a shot just like that a couple of weeks ago.
Went up to the desk, and said "what's with the 50 feet of flat oil?" = the kid at the desk replied "is that why I didn't score well in juniors on saturday?"

Ugly. The problem with that kind of shot - at least for me - is that I'd throw two shots the same, and get in my own way with the carrydown.

Not the ugliest, though. The worst I've seen is a deliberate sport ratio (although not sport compliant) reverse block. In other words, it was worse than flat - with 2X the oil outside... UUUUUUGGGLLLYYY.

The reverse block is brutal.  Give me a flat condition anyday over a reverse.

Well my monday nite league house, (century lanes)  holds a 9pin no-tap tournament every yr in March, well the first yr, they put out 50ft of oil in a reverse block,  inside 10 was oily, and outside 10 was even oilier lol.

the next yr, the GM at the time Sean Quinn, put out a PBA pattern of 26ft of oil, and there was a nice hang spot on board 10@ 40ft.  I mean i never seen Urethane hook so much lol.

I didnt bowl in it last yr, cuz the first two years, someone with a 130avg, and tons of handicap would shoot 800, without handicap lol.

So the big question is whats worse,, a reverse block or very short oil?

Festival of Bowling in '99 put out a flat shot to 47 feet with a buff to 52.  Two guys I was bowling (or I should say struggling) with said "Gee, I've bowled Regionals that were easier than this!"

One guy had a LaNina sanded to 600 grit and couldn't get it to even ripple.  I still shudder when I think about that tournament

I have bowled on quite a few of the floods shots you guys are talking about, as well as sport compliant patterns, and reverse blocks. The hardest for me was a tournament I bowled in that had to have been flat, heavy, and about 50 ft. long on the left lane, and the right lane was screaming. The right was so dry I had to grab a conventional grip Brunswick Minerite of the house ball rack...and throw it with a "broken wrist" 17 out to 3-4. The painfully part was the above ground ball returns, that left my right foot and ankle purple for about 8-10 days. Usually if the lanes are tough, you can find something...but when they are night and day different like that, it is hard to repeat shots, even if you find the needle in the haystack that is the pocket. Also, if you want to try bowling on something unplayable...try the Peterson Tournament in Chicago.

I bowled on a pattern in Clayton, NC in a tournament a few years ago where I swear they had oil to the backstops.  Everything I tried to swing in practice just kept sliding.  So, being the bowler of talent that I am [] I took a dull Ebonite Savage, lined my feet up on 12 or so, put the ball down in a straight line up 5 with creep speed and a lot of hand.  Basically it just slid to the pocket and hit hard enough to carry the corners.

I shot 621 on that crap while the 200+ average bowlers around me were trying hard to spray the lane like they do in league play.  I think my set was the second highest on that squad.  What sucks is that it was a doubles tournament and my partner had one speed: all of it.  His idea of adjusting was throwing it in the same place over and over waiting for the rotation of the earth to move the ball.

I won a couple of brackets so I got som cash out of the deal, but that had to be the worst lane conditions under which I have ever bowled.

Someone mentioned PBA pattern D.  If you thought that pattern is hard, you didn't play it right.  Pattern D has been where I shot my highest PBA games.  Try pattern B.  It'll make you want to pull your hair out.  Nothing outside of 12 except skid.  Play on 15, pull it 2 boards and your through the nose.  Push it a couple boards outside and you've got a real nice washout.  Fun.  I shot -2 for 8 games on it and felt like I had accomplished something.  Not to mention I cashed.

Vidalia, GA before resin, 10 game tournament, reverse christmas tree. Once the ball got to the 8 board it was gone.  Shot about -100 for the first 5 games finding out that no matter how deep I went I couldn't keep it on the right side of the head pin.  Second five, started FLAMING it up the 2 board, go to about 50 feet and take a massive left turn.  Shot about +120 the second 5 to salvage 2nd place. Urethane and plastic balls will hook under the right lane conditions.

I was supposed to bowl in a SCRATCH tourney last year, I ended up not being able to go. THANK GOODNESS I didn't go.  My proshop guy ran the tourney, didn't bowl, and had NOTHING to do with the shot.  He went to the house and used his scoring software for them.  The winner of the tourney averaged 171 for 5 games. Remember this is SCRATCH tourney. the shot was FLAT to 55' with nicely stripped backends. so they did umm no good. Heavy oil, flat, 55'... now what ball can track come up with to handle THAT!? I'm thinkin the animal would look like a kitten.

Flat, heavy, gutter to gutter, the first 15 feet.  15-28, essentially no oil (3 units) from 1-15 on each side(i.e., oil between 15-25 only), 28 to 40 dished out (very little 15-25 gradually increasing as you got outside.  Stripped backends.

I bowled a ACUI college tournament in Northhampton,MA my junior year that I won averaging 210 for 9 games. Out of 60 bowlers only one other finished above 200. The first 10 boards were flooded with oil down at least 45 feet, and then the insides were only a little drier than that. I played frozen angle up 12 board with my Blue Hammer while I watched many normal 220+ averages shoot 140 games.

Reverse blocks are by far the hardest thing I have ever bowled on.  What was stupid about was the leftys are the tourney were using infernos and other polished resins while the rights strugged with HPH's, Quantams, and other high load particles.

I want to second that year's BTM was quite the difficult shot.  I bowled early morning as well.  Screaming backends and no oil up front either.  By the last 2 games we hit pairs that had 4 or 5 games on them and at least a little carrydown was present.  I really wish I would have bowled it later in the day after the pattern settled in a bit, would have made a big difference.  But with all that, I'm still looking forward to see what the BTM throws at us this year.
