Do your feet have to be all the way on the wood or can your heals be be touching behind it?

Winning and Losing are both very temporary things. Having done one or the other, we move on. Gloating over Victory or Sulking in Defeat is a good way to Stand Still.

I used to start my approach with my heels hanging off the back of the approach, and I'd finish within 1" of the foul line, and all of this took place with a 4 step approach!!!  Needless to say, I generated some incredible ball speed with my legs....however, several injuries later, I've had to tone down my game several notches.  Since I've slowed down my approach and taken some of the physical aspect out of the game, my accuracy and scores both actually improved over where they were before, because I was simply overpowering the lanes in the years before.  Sometimes too much of a good thing is a bad thing.

I've personally seen a guy that had one foot off the back of the approach, and I heard about someone on PBA Tour years ago that started his whole footwork from behind the approach.  Don't know the guy's name, but could probably find it if I tried hard enough.

Nevada,
I don't know if this is the one you are thinking of, but John Mazza was doing this for a while.  He made the TV show once or twice while he was doing it, and it was pretty strange to watch.
