I know that we all need to clean our equipment alot. Most of us clean it regularly right after we bowl. However, my question lies not in how often you clean the ball, but how much cleaner to use when cleaning the ball. Personally, I have been using Ultimate Ball Rejuvenator, and the stuff is great, but how much of a particular cleaner do we actually need to use?? Is too much cleaner on the surface a bad thing?? The directions on the Rejuvenator say to spray on and let sit for a minute or so. Well, if I spray on alot and let sit, is that harming the coverstock or just getting a deeper clean?? Your thoughts.

I never use cleaner anymore, all it ever did was make my stuff slimy or kill it. I've even tested it a couple times now that I've been in the pro shop and have a better idea of what I'm doing, can't stand cleaner.

Thought I would throw my opinion in. The only thing I use to clean my balls is simple green. It is ABC approved for use and it works great. Tried some other stuff but the simple green doesn't efect ball reaction at all.

I did use Ultimate something or other, it was a gel. Then there's some other kind of cleaner in the shop, it especially makes stuff slimy, it really killed a buddy of mine's Smash/R. It's about as powerful as urethane now.

I have a gel by Ultimate Bowling Products called, Ultra Clean. I certainly hope this is not the one you're using. I can get more off a ball by using spit and a towel. However, since it's safe on bowling balls, I found it great to get dirt off sensitive crap all over the house, just not bowling balls.

I'd love to know exactly what that cleaner is so we can be sure not to use it. Are you sure it was the use of that cleaner alone which "killed" the SmashR?

Rock, I would check with the manufacturer. I doubt if the cleaners are strong enough to damage your equipment. If it was that strong there would be warning labels about skin contact. However, just guessing here. Personally I just use the minimum amount of cleaner and just keep using new towels and more cleaner until nothintg shows up on the towel.

Maybe you should read the ABC procedures for the approval of a ball cleaner. They are on the ABC website.

Technically, the main part of their procedure, as I understand it, is that they place the cleaner on the ball via a rag soaked in the cleaner and let it sit there for 30 minutes. If it does not soften the ball to below 73 on the hardness scale, then it is approved. Whether or not it chemically does any damage, no one but the chemical company who produced it can say. The manufacturer will tell you it is 100% safe; I suspect most approved ball cleaners are 100% safe.

Charlest, thanks for the link, but I am a bit confused a bit more. Most of those cleaners were approved for use DURING sanctioned competition. I thought you couldnt use cleaners during competition. I know you cant alter a surface during, but you can use a cleaner??

Please take a step back and think for a second.
OK, I am trying to phrase this so it doesn't sound nasty. I am trying to be very polite, but I don't understand why you are saying this.

Of course, you can use a cleaner unless the local laws or tournament laws and rules specify otherwise.

Is there some reason you do not believe what was written by the ABC on their official website? (not written by me, as I am only passing it along.)

Or maybe it's more correct to say -
you must choose whether to believe word of mouth of bowlers taking during bowling or the written word of bowling's sanctioning body?

Rock - I've never used rejuvenator spray, I just use a spray on-wipe of ball cleaner or 409 type cleaner at the end of the night. All I do is spray a towel to get it a little damp, then spray the ball and wipe off. Seems to do OK for me.

I'd hate to see one of Hamsters bowling balls on a warm day! He wants to complain about slimy!! Oh well, it's his stuff. LOL.

Yes, you can use cleaners during competition. In fact, you can use almost anything, even Hook-It I believe, that doesn't increase the surface of the ball. ABC seems to think that it's okay to decrease overall hook, but not to increase overall hook. That's why you can't use sandpaper or ScotchBrite once the match begins.

As for your question about cleaners, the only cleaner I would be worried about leaving on a ball for any length of time is Hook-It. That is some powerful stuff. I don't think Ultimate's Rejuvenator is even in the same league.
