for the heavy handers on this site..
« on: October 09, 2009, 03:31:52 AM »
my rev rate is generally 480-500, and i find myself using older and or less aggressive equipment these days. overall, im wondering if others on here with plenty of hand are finding themselves doing this as well? in general im talking about leagues, but alot of tournaments these days are using kegel and pba patterns, and while i can get some use on tournament patterns with newer stuff, leagues are a different story. as hard as i try to use the latest and greatest i still find myself going back to an original eraser or a blue pulse in the majority of league. along those lines, would it be better to drill weaker equipment stronger, or should i be drilling the newer stuff weaker, say 5-5 1/2" pin to pap?

I have been using 5" pin to PAP.

Also, I drilled up a global 900 link.  It is their
least agressive ball.  It works great for league
conditions.

I have the same problem.  The deal is that most centers have not altered their pattern/volume of pattern over the last 5-10 years.  A center mechanic here in ATL said that at their center, they had not changed the lane condition in almost 10 years.  Tournaments are going to be different simply because they are a one time thing for some centers where as leagues are in some cases an every night thing.  I think it boils down to budget in purchasing lane oil from center to center.  They want to increase their revenues without having to increase the budget.  I believe it could be all about something called margin/profits.  But, then again, I may be wrong.  But, that is what I see.

I'm pretty close to your stats, mostly rev dominant.  I use 5.5"  Pin to PAP a lot.  Over your fingers will get the ball down the lane, but snap really hard with most of today's covers.  I go with pin under fingers if I want tame.  Yes, the ball will hook earlier, but a ton more even and usually less overall hook(won't stand as far left).

I have been going with higher pin distances myself also I have hardly touched my Pure Tactics, Pro Tactics or Ultra Tactics this season, the gear that has seen the most action in my bag is my Ravage VII with a 6 inch pin drilling. Ultra Radical Pro, and the Ultima RP.

I think older stuff on modern THS Conditions is a better match then alot of the new stuff.

i guess its nice to know im not the only one fighting this lol. my home house i not a cake walk, and the shot seems to vary from week to week sometimes but thats another story all together lol. even when the oil is increased around here, most bowlers use virtuals or other upper end balls and the shot gets blown up after one game, by this time im already scaling back on strength or taking a big step left! im thinking about trying some weaker stuff, i would love to bowl 3 games in league and not have to change balls!

heck ive gotten to where i just leave the new stuff at home. normally im taking the eraser, a tropical storm drilled full roller(actually rolls great and bleeds energy sooner) and an old angle evoloution if i see a little more volume. im also finding out that even the tropical's and lower end stuff ive thrown can be alot more angular on the back than the upper end stuff.

I dont have that problem to that extant.

But I have found in most cases the newer midline to weaker equipment drilled med to aggressive rolls really well. Plus the prices make it great for buying two or three balls.

Drilling the pin further from your PAP gets the ball through the lanes cleaner but if you put a lot of hand in it the ball it will still flip, usually harder on the backends and become uncontrollable.

I had a Ebonite 2nd generation Puma that was about a 6-6.25" pin from pap(under my left finger) with the cg in the palm and that ball was scary. Very clean through the heads but then went left extremely hard and never stopped.

Had a Columbia Alter Ego drilled the same way but the pin to cg was a little longer, so the cg was a little closer towards the thumb and kicked right with a weight hole just right of my thumb. That was the best ball I''ve ever owned. Clean through the heads and very strong and controlled on the backends.

I later drilled an overseas zone with similar characteristics on that same pattern as the Alter Ego and It was too much on the backends.

Medium to lower end equipment rolls amazing for the price.

I love my new Jigsaw for the first game or so but then it is time for my Blue Avalanche pearl.

now i just take hand out of the ball.  been playing a 12 to 5 fluff shot in league just to score.  otherwise, i would be deep inside, 18 at the arrows and migrating to 4/5 arrow by end of night.  got tired of fighting the reaction and the quick breakdown of the lanes, found it was easier to just take hand out of the ball and play the fluff shot.

Learn how to get in front of the ball return/loft the ball. I do this in league from time to time.

I agree with the in front of the ball return response.  Our high end of the house hooks waaaaayyyyy more than the low end.  I get in front of it all the time to help play 5-6th arrow
