For those of you that play deeper than the 5th arrow?
« on: November 05, 2015, 01:08:02 PM »
I can see this being easier on the left lane (Right Handers), but the right lane ,with the ball return in the way, it has to be difficult.

How do you line up? Do you change anything in your stance?

How far can you go left before you think about standing in front of the ball return?

Personally for me I have had some success on the lanes playing just right of the 5th arrow. Anything deeper, I usually struggled t get the ball right and towards the target. In most cases I would pull the ball left.

What's deepest you have played on the lanes and had success?

Very rarely do I play passed the 5th arrow. But, I've done it in the past on non THS and one of my trips overseas on a guardian surface with a city pattern.

I stand in front of the ball return taking 4 steps (normally I take 5), with the first step being really really short - more of a timing step. I don't alter my step up. The only thing I do different in my approach is my push away. I push inside to create a figure 8 type swing. Also mentally and visually, I try to think I'm playing "down and in". I don't swing it big with my rev rate, I can't. So, I keep the pocket close if the lanes allows me to (and if my body can do it lol)....it's a tough angle to play and I don't prefer it. but, it's good to try and practice it because one day you may need to.

Likewise, a ball that has a hook set motion works for me.

Getting even close to 5th arrow is pretty tough for me. As an old guy who never developed the open shouldered approach with left drift I can barely get to 5th arrow.  Fortunately in todays formats it is much less common to have to got inside 4th arrow for my game.  In the rare instances where you have to get super deep, the tips from Xray are spot on.  Once you get to 4th arrow you are really looking for a fall back look as opposed to crossing a tremendous amount of boards right of the headpin.
