for those of you who are not on staff, what...
« on: April 01, 2014, 12:57:34 PM »
makes you throw just one brand? (if you are)

I'm finding it hard in the last 4 to 5 years to throw anything else but Storm. Before I tried storm, I was liking Track and C300 (pre ebo) and the V2 by Ebo. Since trying Storm in 2006, I've tried other brands. AZO, LM, Bruns, Hammer, Motiv, and DV8. All these balls except Too Reckless, were all sold or given away.

Now that I'm slowly starting a new bag for Fall/winter 2014, I'm really hesitant to try other brands. Right now, I'm thinking Storm (ZG, IQF, and Breeze) for starters. But LordField looks good where I'll be bowling leagues. But.....I hate to try something and after surface adjustments and 24 games, I ended up selling it or giving it away. (There are a one or two Storm/RG balls I didn't like too)

I know there are advantages of using multiple brands, especially if I bowl a travel league. But, I think my style/game limits me to a few brands, and I just found only one for now...

Likewise With Storm, they currently have everything I'm looking for. Making it easier to pick and choose. But there is that "what if" factor lol....

I legitimately have not had a single non Motiv ball give me that what if feeling. If I see someone throw something, I immediately think of what Motiv ball would give me that reaction, only better, for longer. To each his own though!

OP doesn't apply to me.

I tend to create slots in my arsenal and attempt to fill by using driller recommendations as well as what balls tend to be big hits.

A lot of people like to create an arsenal based off one brand (for progressions etc) but I've always been able to create a nice progression of ball motions using a variety of brands.  I had at one time used an all Hammer arsenal but it wasn't something I couldn't create using all brands.

Just me though.

I actually feel the same way.  I've had GREAT balls from other companies, Hammer's Jigsaw Trap and especially the Taboo, Storm's Prodigy, DV8s Brutal Nightmare, Seismic's Venator and Raging Bull Long Horn, etc.  But the Motiv version of all of those is THE ball.  The Sigma Sting is a better Prodigy, the Revolt is a better Taboo, the Sigma Tour is a better Venator, etc.  Obviously every brand loyal guy will feel that way, and it's not about trying to make a case for one company vs another, it's about the concept.  If Storm does for you what Motiv does for us, THROW IT.

What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?

Which current MOTIV ball would be your "replacement" for a Track Freak (Yes,i have a fresh one of these, maybe 15-20 games) or Hyper Cell?

Hyper Cell
Freak
Freak Out
Profit
Totally Defiant
Pursuit
C-System Versa Max

I don't know the Track Freak, but the closest to the Hyper Cell (in the Motiv line up) will be the Cruel Intent.

Freak, probably the Revolt. Although the Freak has a particle cover, it also has a high rg. The Revolt being a low rg would basically make up for the fact that it's reactive, no particle. You would probably get better continuation and carry out of the Revolt though. Not that that would be a huge issue. Lol.

As for the Hyper Cell, the Cruel Intent or the Raptor Talon with the correct drilling would it's replacement with ease.

I throw predominately Ebonite, but for a funny reason. I find them on clearance and used for super cheap compared to other brands, and capitalize on their unpopularity by building an arsenal that I can afford.

I also find them very good balls that last a long time, so that helps.

I'm in the same boat so to speak. I wait for balls to go on the "must go item" list...The last current NIB I Bought were the crossroad and Vivid. The rest (reign supreme, shooting star, etc..were on clearance)

I went to almost all Storm simply for the ease of building an arsenal. I have sometimes found it difficult to determine how different balls are supposed to fit next to one another. Well, by sticking to one brand, that work is kind of done for me. I can just use Storm's own literature to tell me how certain balls are supposed to stack up to one another. It's made things easier and helped me avoid having a bunch of overlapping pieces in the bag.

xray,
I loved the HyRoad, had a bunch of 300's and an 857 with it (small figjam, lol). Also liked the Modern Marvel a little. But then I tried the Nano Pearl and I thought it was junk, for me. I tried Seismic, loved the Solaris Requiem, but couldn't get a good reaction with the Aftermath. Tried Motiv, as I said, and the 2Cruel was just junk. So far, I have had pretty good luck with Radical, like the Reax and Reax Pearl I have. I can go on and on, lol. I liked some of the Hammer line, loved the Black Widow, even liked the No Mercy and the Jigsaw Corner. Loved my Roto Grip Grenade back in the day, and the Original Cell, but hated the Rouge Cell and tried a Defiant and thought it was ok, not great. Maybe, like Gizmo said in another thread, I am just an idiot, lol.

I would love to find one company where I just loved everything I tried, or at least the majority of it. I would stick with one company. It obviously makes it easier to put together an arsenal, and cover the majority of conditions you might face. Plus the bonus of looking like a staffer that DP3 mentioned, lol. So for you Motiv guys, since I didn't like the 2Cruel at all...just never turned the corner or hit, what would be a good ball to try in the Motive line? I am RH, about 19 mph, about 380 RPM, and tilt of about 26 deg.

Personally, I think the Sigma Sting is the best ball Motiv has produced to date. Then again, I've had great success with the 2 Cruel. LOL

With all these different "literature" used for coverstocks, hook potential, and even number names for balls (track) etc.....it gets really confusing to catch up. It's like trying to read a hip-hop/rapper's welcome hand shake, or the third base coaches sign for bunt..

I get lost with all these layout names too.... dual angle, PSA, 4 x 4, etc... it's like fu fu coffee names at Starbucks...why do you think many bowlers think so damn much?

This is the best answer I have ever heard and I do the same primarily.  I'm not one to spend $500 a month on equipment, I'd rather spend around $600 a season on equipment buying the closeouts from a year or two ago to gauge what motions and core numbers suit my style the best.  Then I will find a closeout with similar characteristics to build an arsenal based on what I see.

Very good answer, and Ebonite is still making very good equipment.
